This summer’s heat wave has left the country sizzling with all-time high temperature records being broken all over the U.S. Sitting comfortably in our air conditioned homes, the thought of folks stuck out in the sweltering heat with nowhere to go may not occur to most of us. In this affluent area, homelessness is overlooked as a major problem, but the reality is that thousands in Northern Virginia do not have permanent housing and in this ongoing recession those numbers continue to rise.

New Hope Housing (http://www.newhopehousing.org) is working to alleviate this problem by providing homeless families and individuals with shelter and the tools to build a better life and a brighter future. The non-profit is the oldest and largest provider of shelter beds in Northern Virginia, providing a comprehensive, innovative array of services to homeless families since its inception in 1977. During the last 35 years, New Hope has added programs and shelters to reach ever increasing numbers of those living in need. Today, New Hope manages seven shelter programs that provide 179 beds year round with an additional 47 beds in winter and transitional housing programs and permanent supportive housing programs for single adults and families. On any given night, over 300 persons find hope and hospitality in New Hope’s programs.

How can Loudoun County residents help the community’s homeless while also making the best of the summer heat? As part of their Help the Homeless Program 2012, New Hope Housing and Booz Allen Hamilton are hosting the first New Hope Swing and Swim FORE! Charity golf tournament and family fun day. Come out and join us on August 11 at Algonkian Regional Park in Sterling, VA. Located on the scenic Potomac River shore, the park is home to a beautiful 18-hole (par 72) golf course and the amazing Volcano Island Water Park, as well as several picnic pavilions, a mini putt-putt course, walking trails, and easy access to the Potomac River. All proceeds from the event will benefit New Hope Housing. This is a fantastic way to enjoy a round of golf, spend some time with your friends and family, and support a worthy and important cause.

The golf tournament will start shotgun style at 9:00 am sharp. Players will compete in a hole in one competition and a longest drive competition for several prizes including a Harley Davidson, a flat screen TV, and a set of Callaway Golf irons. Included with the ticket purchase is access to the driving range prior to tournament start, use of the golf carts, a golf gift bag, and breakfast and lunch. Players may register in advance for $75 per person or $300 for a team of four. Algonkian’s front nine tree-lined fairways are long, straight, and flat while the back nine features hills and several dogleg and water holes. Electric and pull carts are available.

We will be out at Volcano Island Water Park from 11:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the adjoining picnic pavilion with live music and a silent auction. Refreshments will be available for purchase at the nearby concession stands. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $8-$10.

So break out your putters and bathing suits and enjoy a day of fun in the sun with us at New Hope Swing and Swim FORE! Charity! About New Hope Housing

New Hope Housing was founded as Route One Corridor Housing in 1977 by a group of concerned citizens who witnessed homeless families and individuals living in run-down motels and the woods in Fairfax County, VA. In 1978, the organization opened the first homeless shelter in Fairfax, Mondloch House, providing safe, decent emergency shelter for eight homeless adults. Operating as an all-volunteer program (until 1982), Route One Corridor Housing received the National Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties in 1980 in recognition of this community-based effort to aid the community’s homeless and indigent families. Since then, New Hope has gone on to be recognized with awards and acknowledgements from the community with the latest in 2011 from the Fairfax County Branch of the NAACP.

In fiscal year 2011, New Hope served over 1,100 persons in their residential programs and 250 persons through their prevention and outreach services. They also helped 22 families and 66 single adults to move to permanent housing and an additional 20 households to move from shelter to transitional housing. Eight hundred adults received education and employment services through New Hope, helping 103 persons to attain new employment.
