Suffolk County, in southern Virginia.

The 4-day school week

You've heard of the 4-day work week. What about the 4-day school week?

School officials in Suffolk County, Va. are seriously considering implementing a 4-day school week after districts across the nation have shown some serious savings by doing so.

According to news reports, about 100 school districts out of the approximately 15,000 in the United States have switched to a 4-day week.

Officials in Webster County, Ky. say they have saved $259,000 a year since converting to a Tuesday to Friday school week five years ago in 2003.

Charles Pyle, spokesman for the Virginia Department of Education said the main concern with a 4-day system would be to ensure students still receive the required 990 hours of instruction time each year.

Suffolk County, with its 14,000 students in public schools, would be the only one in Virginia to make the switch if it does so.

The reasons for doing so would include saving money on things like buses, lower heating and cooling costs and other expenses.

Concerns would include those over daycare, after-school activities and student achievement.

The Suffolk School Board is set to consider the measure this fall.

Just thought that was something interesting to think about. School systems everywhere are trying to save money in one way or another...

I wonder if Loudoun with a population about 4 times greater than Suffolk County would ever consider such a change?
