Schools celebrate Walk to School Week
October is international Walk to School Month, and next week -- Oct. 6 to 10 -- Potowmack Elementary School in Sterling will celebrate its third annual walk to school event.
Walk to School Week (IWALK) is celebrated all across the world and this year, 19 schools from Virginia will participate, including Potowmack Elementary.
During IWALK week, students who walk to school are rewarded with an IWALK sticker each day. If the student walks every day for the week, they will be recognized for their efforts on the morning news show at the school.
IWALK is an international event that promotes safety, health, concern for the environment, a sense of community and physical activity among children and their parents. The event also reduces traffic, pollution, speeding near school and raises awareness of Global Warming.
It gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking.
In 2007, millions of walkers from around the world walked to school together for various reasons – all hoping to create communities that are safe places to walk.
A record 42 countries participated in the event last year, which began in 2000 following several Walk to School campaigns in places like the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States in the 1990s.
In 2007, all 50 states held Walk to School events with an estimated 6,000 schools participating.
