The Longest Days of Summer are Perfect for a Virginia BrewFest
The longest days of Summer are upon us, and the Metro Washington DC area is teeming with outdoor events, festivals and hapless National League local baseball. In past years, craft brew and micro beer aficionados like ourselves could be found enjoying Northern Virginia's most venerable brewery, Old Dominion, and many other local or regional masterpieces at the annual Old Dominion Beer Festival in Ashburn, VA. I'll point out that this time of year is much more appropriate for ice-cold beverages, than it is for the room temperature liquids espoused by DC's wine country. The Old Dominion local brewery is no more, however, and its festival is just a fuzzy, but happy, memory. 2007 was especially jolly, with the huge downpours and thunderstorms dampening the beer labels, but not diluting the spirits.
In its place, however, rises the Northern Virginia Summer Brewfest, a "Celebration of American Beer" - in part supported by the Vintage 50 Restaurant and Brew Lounge of Loudoun County, VA. This weekend, June 27-28, from 11AM to 9PM (7PM Sunday), in Morven Park near Leesburg, over 66 American Breweries will be offering samples and tastings of their finest malt, barley and hops creations. One lone winery will be represented, for those more of the grape than grain temperament. Great food and live music by local bands cements the deal, including Reverend Hookum, Rew Smith, Miguel Aubertin, The BlackJacks, Smylin Jack, the Lloyd Dobler Effect, and Jah Works. Wait-there's more - the "BrewFest Marketplace" with local crafters and artisans, and even kids activities (but no babysitting!).
We'll be there, and hope you will too - to share a long summer day(s) and spectacular summer brews in DC's beer country. The Beer-ati will be there too, from all points USA and elsewhere, sharing stories of new friends from old places (like we've found), and making new friends in this place.
