Supervisors' sinking assessments

Voyeuristic, perhaps. But there is interest in seeing how the members of the Board of Supervisors fared this assessment season.

Of the board's nine members, seven saw the fair market value of their homes drop from 2007, with Chairman Scott York's Sterling home seeing the biggest decline at 22 percent.

Though not by a scorching number, Blue Ridge Supervisor Jim Burton's 10-acre Aldie home was the only one to increase in value. "I can assure you I will be fighting for a lower rate," he said of Kirby Bowers' proposed $1.216 real estate tax rate for 2008.

By the way, this was the first year Supervisor Lori Waters' Lansdowne home was fully assessed since it was under construction the previous assessment cycle.

Here's the complete list:

Susan Klimek Buckley:

07: $860,400 08: $783,900

down 9 percent

Kelly Burk:

07: 413,100 08: 373,100

down 10 percent

Jim Burton:

07: 969,700 08: 1,032,300

UP 6.5 percent

Eugene Delgaudio:

down 5 percent

Sally Kurtz:

07: 657,600 08: 632,400

down 4 percent

Two other parcels she owns saw no change in value.

Andrea McGimsey:

07: 552,600 08: 492,300* (Sterling)

down 11 percent

07: 396,000 08: 376,400 (Ashburn)

Burton's "assessed value" may have gone up, but he gets an exemption due to the fact that he put a conservation easement on his property, and so he has the most expensive property and pays virtually no TAX on his land...after he got paid for his development rights.... hmmmm.... that's western loudoun for you, expensive estates, no tax....

Well this sure is interesting! Did Mrs. Waters build a another new house in Loudoun when she is so concerned about growth that she saw the light of the Piedmont Council? Where has she been living if her house was just built last year? Ms. McGimsey has two houses when she thinks houses are bad and are either one of them in the district she is supposed to live in? At least Mr. Miller's house went down which is probably good since he thinks the work is so hard and the money is so bad at his new job he wished someone had told him about. This is going to be very very interesting!
