Happy Birthday Dr. King!

The message for today's 16th annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's Birthday was "The Time is now, the Dream is Real." The keynote speaker, Ms. Phyllis Randall, challenged the young men and women to take responsibility for their actions and respect each other. Although much of her message addressed problems in the African-American community, her solutions had meaning to everyone. Ms. Randall also thanked our senior citizens for their efforts in the Civil Rights Movement and urged them to share their experiences with our youth. I'd like to hear from attendees, what they thought about the Ms. Randall's speech. It was truly from the heart.  If anyone videotaped it, I'd like a copy!

The celebration began with a prayer at the Leesburg Courthouse and then over 300 marchers proceeded down Market Street to the Douglas School, the former African-American High School, for refreshments and a program of dancers, singers, and Ms. Randall’s inspiring words.

There were a number of performances by students from Heritage High School, Loudoun County High School, and Harper Park Middle School. Additionally, numerous teachers, students, principals, and two school board members attended the celebration.
