Group AA splits for hoops

The VHSL announced during the state basketball tournaments that Group AA will split into two divisions for basketball beginning next season.

The larger AA schools will make up Division 4 and the smaller ones will comprise Division 3. This model has been used in football for more than 20 years and was adopted by Group A schools in basketball this season.

Some will say this waters down the competition at the regional and state level. At the same time, it gives more teams a chance to compete for titles.

I’m all for that.

Assuming the divisions are the same as those used for the 2007 football season, five Dulles District schools -- Heritage, Potomac Falls, Broad Run, Loudoun County and Park View -- will compete in Division 4. The other three Dulles schools -- Dominion, Freedom and Briar Woods -- will help make up Division 3.

Sticking with the hoops theme, Loudoun County and Freedom fell a combined three points shy of advancing to the AA state girls tourney this winter.

It would have been great to see both schools compete in the state playoffs, but I highly doubt any team was going to stop Hidden Valley from claiming this year’s title.

Hidden Valley dismantled Greensville County by 33 points in the semifinals and lead Waynesboro, 50-33 in the fourth quarter of the championship game as I type this.
