DC Area Farming Website Debuts

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Regional Agricultural Working Group have officially launched their local agricultural website, www.nationalcapitalfarms.org .  The website's goal is to become a one stop shop for both consumers and producers looking for farmer's markets, pick your own farms, community supported agriculture (CSA's), and entitities that provides services to farmers, as well as being a resource for local farming information.

The site features an interactive regional map that helps browsers view, select, and connect to agricultural producers and programs in their county, or throughout the greater DC area.  The Loudoun portion of the site was constructed with help from the Agricultural staff at the Loudoun Economic Development office, as well as the Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District.  The information from MWCOG, Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District, and Loudoun's Ag Development office gives local consumers the tools to spend their food dollar closer to home on products made locally, which helps "feed" our local economy as well as local residents.

 Information on the website includes:

-Local government agricultural support information

-A calendar of events at local farmer's markets

-An ag forum and classifieds

-A seasonal food calendar for knowing what's in season when

-Locations of pick-your-own (PYO) farms

-Restaurants featuring locally grown products (including many in Loudoun!)

-Links to Regional Ag Working Group and other affiliate websites

-Regional Agricultural Stats

-Educational programs

So take a few minutes to check out www.nationalcapitalfarms.org and see what your neighbors are growing, and where you can get your hands on it.  If you're a farmer or other producer, the NCF site helps locate marketing opportunities for your product both in Loudoun, and around the DC region.  Either way, buying and selling locally helps spur our local economy and keep our locally earned dollars..well..local!
