Winter Farming: Winter Farm Market Opens in Leesburg and Winter Farm Products Guide

Loudoun residents looking to keep things local over the holidays and throughout the winter have two opportunities to do so.

The Rural Economic Development Office has released their 2009 Winter Farm Products Guide.  According to the announcement from Melissa Piper-Nelson, Agricultural Marketing Manager, “Christmas in the Loudoun Valleys” lists 22 Christmas tree farms and retail outlets where you can choose-and-cut your own tree, purchase evergreen wreaths and roping, or select a colorful poinsettia plant for the holiday season. The guide includes a colorful map showing farm locations, Christmas tree care and recycling tips, and information on family fun activities at farms throughout the county.

The "Christmas in the Loudoun Valleys" guide can be found at Loudoun libraries, community centers, and at the Farm Heritage Museum in Sterling or simply my e-mailing info@loudounfarms.org or calling 703-777-0426.

In other Winter Ag news, the Leesburg Winter Farmer's Market located at the Virginia Village Shopping Center on Catoctin Circle.  Leesburg Vice Mayor Katie Hammler and Leesburg lamb and beef farmer Chris Hatch opened the market with a ribbon cutting (pictured).  The market is open Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM to noon and includes dairy, produce, lamb, beef, eggs, baked goods, honey, and more all direct from the producers themselves.  The Leesburg Winter Market is part of the Loudoun Valley Homegrown Markets Association.
