Ashburn blog: Spring musicals coming to Ashburn

The spectacle and magic of the Broadway musical "Pippin" is coming to Stone Bridge High School. The community is invited into this magical musical by a group of fictional vaudeville players who tell the story of the young prince, Pippin, and his search for fulfillment, using both spoken word and American Sign Language.

The school’s theater department has been working hard over the past year translating the show so it may be enjoyed by both the deaf and hearing community Each character in the show has been double cast with a speaking actor and a signing actor to express the words as well as the spirit of the character and the ensemble and choreography fully integrate ASL as well. Join Stone Bridge High School on Hay Road in Ashburn April 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. and April 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Trailside Middle School will present "Aladdin Jr." April 28 and May 5 at 7 p.m. and April 29 and May 6 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The musical is based on Disney's animated film, and takes the viewers to the desert to visit a group of street rates, royalty, and magical creatures. Trailside is located on Claiborne Parkway in Ashburn.

Rock Ridge High School brings to the stage “Tarzan the Stage Musical” at 7 p.m. April 21-23, May 5-6 and May 12-13. There will also be matinees at 2 p.m. April 22, 23 and May 6.

The musical is based on the Disney film about a boy raised by gorillas. As he grows up, he must decide where he really belongs when he discovers he is a human. Over 100 students brings this story to life through song, dance and live music from the Rock Ridge student Pit Orchestra.

Rock Ridge will offer "backstage passes" at the 2 p.m. matinee performances. The audience is invited to buy a special ticket in advance of the show to see the wonders of theater from the perspective of a cast member. Meet Tarzan, Jane and their family of apes and enjoy some of their favorite foods of the jungle. The $15 pass includes a backstage tour, tour of the lighting and sound booth then ends with pictures and 'hanging' with the Tarzan cast. Jungle food provided and a great seat for the show will be reserved for you.
