Cascades Blog: Hard-working students

Vivek Rao, a recent Dominion High School graduate, was named an Academic All-American by the National Speech and Debate Association, an organization focused on middle school, high school and college students. The award recognizes Rao for earning an NSDA Superior Distinction ranking, academic excellence, and outstanding leadership and character. Rao is one of nearly 500 students in the U.S. to have earned NSDA Academic All-American status.

Governor’s School Nominees

Six Eastern Loudoun high school students are nominees for the 2017 Summer Residential Governor’s Schools. The Governor’s Schools program provides up to four weeks of challenging studies and college-campus residency for gifted students. The Dominion High School nominees are: Matthew Armstrong (VIMS marine science studies), Sophia Goldbeck (math, science, technology studies) and Allison Lane (visual and performing arts studies). The Potomac Falls High School nominees are: Rhea Agarwal (humanities studies), Vincent D’Agostino (visual and performing arts studies) and Carlos Olivares (visual and performing arts studies).

Foreign Language Honors


Six Eastern Loudoun high school students have been invited to the 2017 Governor’s Foreign Language Academies. The students will attend full-immersion academies in French, German or Spanish. The German Academy attendees from the area are Mika Cutler of Dominion High School and Daniel Mohr of Park View High School. Four students from Potomac Falls High School will attend Foreign Language Academies in a variety of areas: Reem Al-Humadi (French studies), Shahira Ali (Spanish studies), Emma Duelm (German studies) and Nicole Luz (French studies).

"My Favorite Sings"

The StageCoach Theatre for Young Audiences heads to the Loudoun County public libraries in Eastern Loudoun to launch “My Favorite Sings,” a new one-act storybook cabaret featuring characters from recent popular animated films. The show, written and directed by Addie Schafer of Ashburn, features cast members Alexandria Backer of Sterling, Katie Hudson and Megan Kelly of Ashburn, Jeffrey Cates of Leesburg and Santiago Alfonzo-Meza of McLean. Production assistance is provided by Tanya Vanderheiden of Ashburn.

“My Favorite Sings” debuts July 9 at 2 p.m. at the new Sterling Plaza Shopping Center location of the Loudoun County Public Library. The cabaret returns to the Sterling branch of the library on July 16 at 2 p.m. The library system’s Cascades branch gets in on the fun with shows July 15 at noon and 3 p.m. All performances are free of charge.
