Cascades Blog: Sterling Ruritans honor outstanding students

The Sterling Ruritan Club celebrated the achievements of 24 eastern Loudoun students with its 63rd annual awards and scholarship banquet, held May 10 at the Ruritan Club in Sterling.

The elementary school students recognized were: Adam Hurlich of Algonkian Elementary, Nadia Freidson of Countryside Elementary, Joshua Castillo-Cruz of Forest Grove Elementary, Lilian Thomas of Guilford Elementary, Alexandra Pantella of Horizon Elementary, Charlie De Anda of Lowes Island Elementary, Maya Sachdev of Meadlowland Elementary, Chase Tollefson of Potowmack Elementary, Krit Barlow of Rolling Ridge Elementary, Anna Helstrom of Sterling Elementary, Yousuf Shehzad of Sugarland Elementary and Dulce Hernandez of Sully Elementary.

Three middle school students received awards: Tharun Saravanan of River Bend Middle School, Cora MacMillan of Seneca Ridge Middle School and Julio Gonzalez of Sterling Middle School.

Three high school students were honored: Alexa Allen of Dominion High School, Colin Mills of Park View High School and Christian Tessman of Potomac Falls High School.

The club also provided $1,000 scholarships to six students attending eastern Loudoun high schools. A Sterling Ruritan Academic Excellence Scholarship was awarded to Thomas Base of Dominion High School, Hibba Khan of Park View High School and Abigail Laurenson of Potomac Falls High School. A Sterling Ruritan Dr. Edgar B. Hatrick III Scholarship for Community Service went to Kaelly Aguilar of Dominion High School, Nathaniel Coombs of Park View High School and Pey-Yun Anna Wang of Potomac Falls High School.

The annual awards and scholarship programs are funded by Sterling Ruritan events, such as the club’s weekly Thursday night bingo games (the games begin at 7 p.m.), and rental income from the club’s meeting hall and food sales at events like Sterlingfest.

The Sterling Ruritan Club is looking for new members to help continue the club’s tradition of service to the Sterling community. Membership is open to anyone in the area. The club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The next meeting takes place June 14 at the Sterling Ruritan Club building on Ruritan Road, near the intersection of Route 28 and Church Road in Sterling.
