Purcellville Blog: ‘Oklahoma!’ on stage at Franklin Park

As Main Street Theater Productions celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, the group is ready to take the stage this weekend with their most recent production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “Oklahoma!”

Directed by Karlah Louis, the 50-plus actors in the show have some newcomers in the group, including Holly Kelly and Brynn Lackey as Laurey and Ado Annie. In addition, Ann Marie Stewart is Aunt Eller, Matt Curtis plays Cowboy Curley, and Ian Carlson is Will Parker.

In addition to Louis, the directorial team is completed by the energized choreography of Ann Cirillo, Meghan Bentley, and music director Willis Rosenfelt.

Louis said this show revolutionized musical theater by integrating story and song, introducing a full ballet, and opening with a lone cowboy singing about corn and meadows all the while winning the heart of his audience.

“It was the first musical where actors no longer stepped forward to sing separate from the story but sang into the story. A character was so moved emotionally he had to burst into song. I have always felt that build in this show and Rodgers and Hammerstein does that right,” Louis said.

Main Street Theater began five years ago with Arthur and Karlah Louis’ vision to bring family-friendly community theater to western Loudoun.

Their next show this season is “Take Two Goes to the Tonys,” a perfect Valentine date, on stage Feb. 16-18, 2018. To close out the year, Main Street ventures a little darker and “Into the Woods,” directed by Ann Cirillo.

“Oklahoma!” opens at the Franklin Park Arts Center Oct. 13-15 and Oct. 20-22, Friday and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. See http://www.ShowTix4U to purchase tickets.
