Sterling Blog: Cats, cobras and catches

When I was five, a white cat came into our backyard. My parents made the mistake of telling my sister and brother and me that if the cat was there in the morning, we could keep it. We lured it with milk-soaked cookies (we were young, we used the bait we knew) and came out hourly to check on him. We really wanted a cat. And that’s how Snowball got adopted.

t’s estimated that there are more than 3.4 million cats living in shelters, and many of these furry friends could use some toys. Cats are curious by nature and need toys to ward off boredom and depression, not to mention it’s good for their kittenish figure. On June 11, the Sterling Library in the Sterling Plaza is holding its DIY Teens for middle school and high school students from 4 until 5 p.m. Attendees will be making cat toys, which can then be taken home for your own cat or provided to the cats at the animal shelter to enjoy until they get their forever homes.

The next day, June 12, the library will be hosting Senior Yoga in the same two meeting rooms. Now you may think, if you’re over the age of 55, the cobra pose isn’t for you. However, numerous studies have shown that yoga is perfect for seniors looking for a low impact way to be healthy. Yoga can improve balance, strengthen bones, and help control high blood pressure. From 1-2 p.m., a certified fitness instructor will teach yoga exercises appropriate for ages 55 and up. For more information, call the library at 571-258-3309.

The Baseliners are our own local travel softball program—and have been for many, many years. Sponsored by local Lower Loudoun Girls Softball League, these young athletes play softball year around, going to tournaments to show off their skills. This month, our three Baseliners teams will be holding tryouts to welcome new members to their dugouts. We currently have an 18 and under team, an aging up 14 and under team, and the brand new 12 and under team. If your daughter is looking for new challenges on the softball field, you can learn more about the teams, the coaches, and the tryout dates at Baseliners.org or by visiting their parent organization at llgsl.com.
