Sterling Blog: We Rock the Spectrum

Being a parent of a special needs child can be a lot of things: challenging, exhausting, uplifting. It can also be isolating. Often children with special needs aren’t included in many of the typical activities and that can mean their parents aren’t included as well. But one mother in Loudoun is building a place in Sterling to help change that.

A couple years ago, Anjali Bector Gulati, who has a child with special needs, visited a gym in Severn Park, Maryland, called We Rock the Spectrum. From swings that can help calm over-stimulation to a calming room for downtime, these gyms specialize in providing a safe place for children with special needs, such as autism, sensory issues and multiple sclerosis. It turned out that the gym was a franchise with opportunities for expansion. For Gulati, it was finding her future.

“All the pieces seemed to fall into place,” says Gulati, whose own franchise of We Rock the Spectrum will open on Davis Drive in early 2018. Soon after visiting the gym in Maryland, she started looking into opening one in Northern Virginia, where as she points out there is so much need. She and her husband skyped with the owners of We Rock the Spectrum who started the gyms in 2010 in California. Once they passed the extensive vetting process, they looked for locations and dealt with banks. This could feel daunting for anyone, but Gulati never wavered. “When you’re passionate, those things don’t matter.”

She then started looking for a place to house the gym, which took 6-7 months. Gulati says Sterling proved to be an ideal location with warehouse space for the gym, while also being easy to get to from most of Northern Virginia, being just off Route 7 and Route 28.

Sitting across from her, the passion is infectious. Gulati’s ideas and vision for We Rock the Spectrum tumble out of her as she wants to just not just have a place where kids can come, but a place for families can gather, get support, and find resources. She plans to hold classes for children, including yoga, music, dance, and social skills, while also serving the families with workshops on IEPs (Independent Education Plans) and nutrition. She talks about the kids who aren’t invited to birthday parties and how she wants to hold a monthly party to make sure every child has a chance to celebrate.

The gym will be located at 22446 Davis Drive, #127, and the build out is going on now.
