Sterling Blog: Things to Smile About

According to a recent study, only about two-thirds of Americans have dental insurance. Some turn down their employer’s insurance as it just doesn’t pay a lot, some never even consider it. Even if you have dental insurance, a trip to the dentist can hurt more in your wallet than in your mouth. Dental care can be very expensive, and sometimes people put it off for months or even years. Now you might think it’s just the case of whiter smile, but people without dental care are at increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and even diabetes.

On Aug. 26 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., Hope for Tomorrow will be at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, 47833 Harry Byrd Highway, for a free dental clinic. They’ll be providing cleanings, extractions, filling, all at no cost. Because space is limited, registration is being held following the masses this weekend - Aug. 12 and 13 - at the church: Saturday, 5:30 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. and noon. This will make sure that you have an appointment and can schedule your time to come in.

When registering and when coming to your appointment, be sure to bring along a government-issued ID and any children under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian with them to receive dental care. This weekend, Aug. 11, 12, and 13, will be your last chance to catch 42nd Street at Potomac Falls HS by our local community theatre, the Sterling Playmakers. This ambitious production full of tap-dancing wizardry has just three more shows, and then those tap shoes get put away. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. if you’re not much of a night owl. You can buy your tickets online at http://www.sterlingplaymakers.com or at the door before the show.

However, the Sterling Playmakers aren’t resting on their success of 42nd Street as auditions are already in the works for their next two productions. What If…/What Then? is eight original one acts that will show you what could have happened or might happen next in some of well-known tales. Auditions will be held Aug. 18, 6:30-8 p.m., and Aug. 19, 1-4 p.m., at the Sterling Community Center and will consist of cold readings from the scripts. Best part is you don’t have to choose as you can audition for as many one-acts as you like. The following week, the Sterling Playmakers will be hosting auditions for the iconic Man of La Mancha, Aug. 25 and 26, 7-9:30 p.m., and Aug. 27, 1-4:30 p.m., at the Cascades Senior Center, 21060 Whitfield Place. You can learn more about both of these opportunities to let your star shine at http://www.sterlingplaymakers.com.
