Ashburn’s Got Talent kicks off Aug. 19

The second annual Ashburn's Got Talent music and vocal competition will kick off Aug. 19 at Blend Coffee Bar, located in Broadlands' Southern Walk Plaza.

Auditions will be held Aug. 19, 26 and Sept. 9, with semi-finals Sept. 16 and finals Sept. 23. Last year there were 51 contestants who auditioned, which was then narrowed to 25 semifinalists.

Last year's winner – Will Salzman – will be performing this Friday at Broadlands Live. The second place winner was Jeyhan Turker and the songwriting award recipient was Nicoletta Karamanis.

Ashburn's Got Talent accepts applicants from people ages 13 and over, and the entry fee is $35 per act. Judges include teachers at Minton's Academy of Music as well as local artists and songwriters. The grand prize is $500.

Blend owners Tracey Powell and Mimi Backhausen created the event to support two of their favorite causes - Friends of Loudoun for expanding access to mental health and suicide prevention programs and Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers for expanding services to elderly and disabled individuals. Last year Blend was able to raise $1000 for each organization.

Powell and Backhausen are celebrating Blend's second anniversary this fall – and they are thrilled to be a part of the Ashburn community.

“We are a little more popular this year, but we are still looking for great contestants to participate. We hope to make it a little bigger and better every year. The contestants last year seemed to really appreciate the feedback they received from the judges,” Powell said.
