October is Virginia Wine Month

October must be the hardest working month on the calendar . Aside from it being the best sports month of the year – with baseball’s post-season, college and pro-football settling into their seasons and hockey gearing up – it also hosts Halloween and Columbus Day, is National Breast Awareness Month and is National Arts and Humanities Month. There are literally dozens of other celebrations that occur throughout the month, too.

And while October is still most closely associated with apple picking, cider and pumpkins, it is also Virginia Wine Month. With retailers and restaurants throughout the region offering specials on Virginia wine, as well as many of the local wineries holding special events, October is the perfect time to get better acquainted with wine being produced in the state. The website http://www.virginiawine.org   has an interactive feature set up to help people navigate all the special events that are happening to celebrate Virginia Wine Month.

What better time is there than October to visit Loudoun’s wineries? With fall foliage and Virginia Wine Month going on, this is the perfect time of the year to visit your local wineries. Loudoun’s wineries are making sure that visiting them in October will be worth your while.

Some of the events going on to entice visitors to visit include 8 Chains North’s “Loco Fridays” where local music, food and wine all come together, and Casanel Vineyards hosts live music, as well as a local chef of Saturdays and Sundays. If you went to Virginia Tech, this is the winery for you to visit, as they also host VT game watches on Saturdays.

If live music doesn’t interest you, pack a picnic and visit some of the more scenic wineries of Loudoun County. Bluemont Vineyards has beautiful panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and North Gate is developing a loyal following for people who want to spend an afternoon at a winery.

Wherever your wine interests lay, October is the perfect time to explore your local wineries, enjoy local wine and meet your winemaking neighbors.
