My children can fight over anything. Usually it drives me crazy. Tonight’s fight (well, one of tonight’s fights) I didn’t mind.
I was telling them of a new addition to their daily chart (which is more like a when-I-manage-to-remember-it chart). The new addition is an additional rotating chore each day. I gave examples, which included cleaning their bathroom.
Son suddenly crumpled into tears.
No, it’s not why you think.
“She never lets me do it,” he cried.
Me: “What??”
Son: “She never lets me clean the bathroom!” *tears fly*
Me: “You can both clean the bathroom.” (Ah, beautiful words I never thought I’d utter.)
Son: “She always does it all by herself!” *tears fly*
Me: “You can clean MY bathroom—want to clean my bathroom?”
Son: *sob* “Yes.”
Me: (holding back laugh) “You can clean my bathroom any time you want. OK?”
Son: *sniffle and nod* “OK.”
You would think their bathroom would be spotless.
I like the approach you took with this subject. It isn’t typical that you find something so to the point and enlightening.
