Community Lutheran Church Young Artist Competition
photoMr. Frazier is the Director of Musical activities at Community Lutheran Church in Sterling and Associate Conductor of the Reston Chorale. In the spring of 2011 Mr. Frazier will serve as an orchestral conductor for a celebration of French Music at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center and as a guest choral clinician and conductor at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

Performance and Eligibility Requirements

Instrumental, keyboard and voice performers will be enrolled in grades 9-12 as of the date of the competition and must reside within a 50-mile radius of Community Lutheran Church http://www.communitylutheran.org/ in Sterling.

Accepted competitors will prepare at least two classical works totaling approximately 10 minutes duration. Each competitor will choose his/her opening performance piece. Instrumentalists and vocalists may be accompanied on piano or organ, but must make their own arrangements for accompanists. It is expected that keyboard and vocal entrants will perform from memory, however instrumentalists are encouraged but not required to perform from memory.

Performers must provide the judges one published or legally printed edition of the music they are performing (no photo copies). 

We will accept 30 total participants, ten in each division. The application deadline is March 25, 2011.

A non-refundable registration fee of $35 is required, which will be returned if you are not accepted.

Accepted applicants will be notified by April 1, 2011.

First and second prizes will be awarded in each vocal, instrumental, and keyboard category. A grand prize will also be awarded to one of the first prizewinners. The first prizewinners of each category must be available to perform at Community Lutheran Church on April 17, 2011. They will receive their awards at that time.

The prizes are as follows: The first prizewinners of the instrumental, keyboard and voice categories will each receive $250 and second prizewinners will receive $100. The grand prizewinner will receive an additional award of $300.

To enter the competition, please request an application by emailing Luke Frazier at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), complete the application and mail it and a $35 fee to Community Lutheran Church at 21014 Whitfield Place, Sterling, VA 20165. Make checks payable to Concerts at Community.

Teachers: feel free to distribute this notice for the benefit of your students or others,and if you have students who have promise but are not ready, encourage them to come and observe the competition.

About Luke Frazier

Luke Frazier received a BM in Piano Performance from West Virginia University and completed an MM in Choral Conducting at Ohio University under the tutelage of Dr. Peter Jarjisian. Mr. Frazier is the Director of Musical activities at Community Lutheran Church and Associate Conductor of the Reston Chorale. In the spring of 2011 Mr. Frazier will serve as an orchestral conductor for a celebration of French Music at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center and as a guest choral clinician and conductor at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

Mr. Frazier’s recent collaborative highlights include recitals in the Metropolitan DC area, Canton OH, Athens OH, Parkersburg WV and New York NY. Mr. Frazier maintains an active private piano and voice studio as well as frequent engagements as an adjudicator and clinician. Recent engagements include vocal and piano clinics and competitions in Loudoun County VA, Boston MA, Buffalo NY, Gallipolis OH, Norfolk VA and Charlottesville VA.
