It’s flu season. What’s more, it’s flu season in the Year of Swine Flu.
And for the first time, my 6-year-old can’t keep his hands out of his mouth.
He used to be a thumb-sucker, but even then, he did not have his hands in his mouth as much as he does now. He’s a pretty confident kid, but I’m guessing it’s something about the stress of starting first grade in a big new school. Sometimes it’s one or two fingers, sometimes four, but in one way or another, his hands are constantly in his mouth.
I’ve explained many times that he is delivering germs—practically gift-wrapped—right into his body. Doesn’t help.
The teacher is trying to break him of the habit by sending him to wash his hands every time she sees his fingers in his mouth. (She’s seeing the germs going the other direction from how my Mommy Eyes see them. To her, he’s slobbering them everywhere rather than taking the germs in. Valid point.)
I thought we were making some headway with her method. He sees us looking at him and jerks his fingers out of his mouth so as not to have to wash his hands (something he has never been very fond of, or good at).
Unfortunately, though, we have a new roadblock—his first loose tooth.
He was crying this morning when he discovered the tooth—he had bitten too hard into his bagel.
By the time he got home from school, he was mighty excited about it.
Son: “I have a loose tooth!”
Mom: “I know. How cool!”
Son: “It’s fun to wiggle it!”
Oh no. Time to get some more hand sanitizer.
