Hornets buzz into D3 World Series

Shenandoah University is in the World Series of Division III college baseball. And the Hornets feature plenty of Loudoun talent on their roster.

The Hornets roster includes senior catcher Sean Plouffe (Broad Run), senior 1B Brett Donahue (Stone Bridge), senior 3B Scott Van Dusseldorp (Heritage), sophomore RHP Matt Griffin (Park View) and sophomore RHP Kyle Scallion (Bishop O’Connell).

Van Dusseldorp and Scallion are enjoying stellar seasons.

Van Dusseldorp leads the team with 63 RBIs in 45 games. He is also hitting .374 with 13 home runs and has scored 53 runs.

Scallion, an Ashburn resident, paces the Hornets with eight saves and boasts a 4-0 record as a reliever. Scallion has a 2.52 ERA and has struck out 31 batters in 39 innings.

Shenandoah (38-8) is one of eight teams to qualify for the NCAA D3 Baseball Championships. The double-elimination tournament begins May 28 with all games being played in Appleton, Wisc.

The Hornets, ranked ninth in the latest D3baseball.com rankings, start the tourney against Illinois Wesleyan (27-20) on Friday at 7:45 p.m.
