For those who think feeding your children healthfully is hard to do, the first step may be to take a look at your own eating habits.
From the time that my son was growing in my belly I knew I wanted to feed him right, from the start! He exclusively nursed past the 6 month mark uninterested in the local fare presented before him at first. Around 7-8 months of age he dabbled in swiss chard and egg yolks all from local farms. I can truly say he was a locavore up until winter time when the local produce started to disappear. Loudoun county has so much to offer to help create healthful meals for the whole family.
From greens to squashes, then on to the meat! He dabbled in Loudoun’s finest; Fields of Athenry chicken and steak, farm fresh veggies and sweet potatoes…he seems to enjoy a variety of local flavors. His palate only got better as we approached 11 months…wild fish, elk, liver, more chicken and beef, lamb and venison. Vegetables too grew in variety and quantity, asparagus (at this point “local” sometimes meant Wegmans) kale, broccoli, apples and I can’t keep him from his “nana” (bananas!) All homemade with no extra hassle. Why? Because he eats what we eat. Just minus any grains (I am choosing a diet where grains are introduced much later.)
Last week was his first birthday party. Sitting between his father and I and keenly watched by skeptical grandparents, he happily ate goat (bought at the Leesburg farmers’ market), wild salmon, asparagus and a delicious grain-free, flour-free, sugar-free cake. The cake was made with love and mommy approved ingredients. The “frosting” was coconut butter with a touch of local, Leesburg honey. He couldn’t get enough and he had a ball eating it with his hands! It was his first “processed” food if you could even call it that. I am proud and lucky to live in a place like Loudoun where I can raise my son on food that nourishes him, is grown close to home and makes him happy. I know the day will come when he will ask for something not-so-healthy, but I am prepared to allow him to learn for himself how eating certain foods affect how he feels and acts. He eats what we eat and that keeps the whole family on track. We don’t eat local, organic or even whole foods 100% of the time, we have our indulgences. But with all of the local resources and local restaurants that Loudoun County has to offer, it sure makes eating healthfully much easier. Meals at home include whole unprocessed foods, such as meat or fish and vegetables, almost exclusively. Cooking only one meal for the whole family gives mommy ONE less thing to do!

I am the “skeptical” Grandmother who bought the leg of goat from Milcreek Farm. This was my first attempt at cooking goat and I went with a spice rub. We cooked it a bit too long for our taste but our Grandson enjoyed every bit of it. Personally, I think it is great that little August is getting the BEST Loudoun fresh markets can offer. He will try something and then make a wrinkly sour face and then ask for more. I have to say that all this nutrition edification has made me think twice about my choices for our household. So I am not as skeptical as one might think. Thank you, Staci for all you are doing for August. It is phenomenal to me that August has only had one cough and cold his first 425 days of life. Kudos!
