Saving the best for last

30 games in five days. The Siegel Center in Richmond was the place to be last week for high school basketball junkies. 10 state champs were crowned—Division 1 thru Division 4 and Group AAA boys and girls.

However, it was the very last of those 30 games that stole the show. The Division 4 boys’ title game between Potomac Falls and Broadway on March 13 had it all.

The game offered more twists and turns than a soap opera. There was obvioulsy a ton at stake and the near-capacity crowd at the 7,500 seat Siegel Center provided the perfect background.

When the clock struck zero after two overtime sessions, Potomac Falls proved victorious, 69-64, in a game where it was really a shame to see either team lose.

13 years after starting the boys’ basketball program at Potomac Falls High School, coach Jeff Hawes led his team to a state championship.

Congrats to the Panthers on an unbelievable season.

Congrats are also in order for Freedom High School’s girls’ basketball team. Coach Jason Eldredge and his players raised the state championship trophy for a second straight year.

Way to go Freedom! Way to go Potomac Falls!
