Wow, something big is happening in Sterling, Virginia. The Worship and Music Ministry of Community Lutheran Church (CLC) proudly present The Singing Men of Ohio to perform right here in Sterling at CLC, adjacent to the Eastern Loudoun Regional Library. The event takes place on Wednesday night, March 23 at 7:30 PM.
The Singing Men of Ohio, the celebrated men’s chorus from Ohio University, is an ensemble of 55 undergraduate and graduate students drawn from all majors across the campus. Established as both a performing ensemble within the School of Music as well as a student organization that sponsors service projects and social activities, the Singing Men of Ohio enjoy a unique blend of professional training in music with opportunities for creative expression in the spirit of fraternity.
Guided by the motto, “Unity through harmony”, the chorus has toured the Mid-west, East Coast, Florida, Wyoming, and China. This touring has advanced the mission of bringing men’s choral singing and its rich background to an ever widening audience. In March 2010, Singing Men of Ohio received accolades for their performance at the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses National Conference. Singing Men performances are recognized for their diverse programming including spirituals, motets, French chansons, German and American part songs and folk songs, musical theatre, popular ballads, barbershop melodies, and their own peculiar brand of hi-jinks. In addition, the chorus is known for its sonorous tone and attention to detail.
Admission is free and there will be a free will donation.
About The Singing Men of Ohio:
The Singing Men of Ohio was originally called the Ohio University Glee Club. Formed in 1906, it was the first glee club in the state of Ohio. The club was temporarily disbanded in the ‘40s because of World War II. In 1971 the School of Music-related issues dissolved the group until 1989, when Dr. Ira T. Zook, who had been a vocal professor at OU since the 70s was invited to reorganize the organization.
After the creation of the Singing Men of Ohio Alumni Weekend and Concert in 2003, with the assistance of Dr. Raymond Feener and the Ohio University Alumni Association (OUAA), Aaron J. Comstock met with Greg Scharer of the OUAA and established the Singing Men of Ohio Alumni Society on July 29th, 2005. The purpose of the society is to support Ohio University and the Singing Men of Ohio and its alumni. Basing its traditions on its beloved glee club, the Singing Men of Ohio Alumni Society exists to “Create and Sustain Unity through Harmony”. Its motto is “to create and sustain unity through harmony among the Singing Men of Ohio and its alumni and friends through music and fellowship, as realized and instilled in them by their friend and founder Dr. Ira Thomas Zook.”
