Wrong again: Obama objects to Arizona’s immigration self-defense

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law the country’s toughest anti-illegal immigration state law during the same week that President Obama’s administration decided it’s time for the federal government to regulate…how much salt we eat. Bet very little money on which one of those two officials called the other’s action “misguided.”

And here are more of Obama’s incredulous words: “I’ve instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation.”

By “the situation” Obama refers to the attempt by Gov. Brewer to stem the overflowing tide of illegal immigration in Arizona, the state most affected by this country’s mostly unsecured borders. It is estimated that 500,000 illegal immigrants live in Arizona, about nine percent of the state’s population. Since 1996 the well-publicized flood of illegal immigrants into the United States has more than doubled, from about 5 million to about 11 million. But during that same period, the number of illegal immigrants living in Arizona has more than quadrupled.

Arizona spends about $1.7 billion annually on costs associated with illegal immigration. These costs are centered on its hospitals, schools, law enforcement and prisons. Last year alone the state spent about $77 million to detain “only” 4,000 illegals. Understandably, Brewer has wide support for the stringent new law among legal residents of Arizona.

The new law allows police to question anyone they “reasonably suspect” to be in the country illegally. It also requires immigrants to carry paperwork that explains their status at all times. Brewer, a Republican, says “decades of federal inaction” on illegal immigration have forced her state to act.

Obama cannot be generally accused of “federal inaction” during his first 15 months in office since he seems determined to have the federal government control everything – from our health care to our salt intake. But he has not yet immersed himself in immigration policy, except to ridicule Brewer’s desperate yet sensible attempt to regain control of her state.

We can only hope that by the time this president pushes passage of a likely unwise federal immigration policy, neither side of Congress is controlled by his party. And leadership like Brewer’s does not bode well for Democrats.

Comments

Maybe the GOP can make us into a neo-fascist state where everyone who isn’t an Anglo-Saxon has to have proof of citizenship?

Pretty pretty please?

I am afraid, americantaxpayer (and by the way, I pay plenty of taxes so my opinion is just as important at yours), your information about the federal government and immigration is totally false.  In point of fact, the inflow of illegals has been significantly reduced and a considerable percentage of those here has dropped as well.

I realize that the Right wing always wants to point to the crappy federal government, but in point of fact, the Bush administration and the Obama administration has made good strides in reducing the illegals.  While the Republican Legislatures in states like Arizona want to blow their horns and threaten the hispanic population, they show themselves to be totally out of touch with reality.

Anyone who wants, can find these facts about immigration.  Stronger enforcement is the key to the changes in the illegal immigration.

By the way, the deal with your last sentence tells the tale as does your arrogant username.  The simple facts are that these illegal immigrants you claim do not pay taxes in actual fact pay a lot of taxes.  The sad thing is that far too many on the right (I am an independent voter as well but I don’t “hate” the democrats or republicans), simply find that it is easier to point to someone else as the enemy rather than put up viable ideas that actually help the American citizen.

But you keep on with your beliefs, I prefer to stick with the reality.

The problem is Harvey, the term “illegal”, means breaking the law. The federal govt does nothing so the states have to deal with it. What rights do they have if they’re in the US illegally? Why not just round them up and drop them off in Iraq or Afghan? 12 million illegals paying no federal or state income taxes. That’s about 1.2 - 12 billion a year lost. Most probably have driver’s license and use service’s paid by real american taxpayers. I’m an independent and hate both dems and repubs. Both parties are at equal fault.

Bob,

If an undocumented immigrant is incarcerated, who pays?  The AZ government will pay for the incarceration, and for health care.  Have you run the numbers?

What is the definition or “reasonably suspect”?  Can any definition that you can think of withstand a 4th Amendment challenge?

Regarding salt regulation, what is the economic cost of the american factory food diet?  Suggest you watch the movie “FOOD, INC.” and write a review in a future blog post.

Two words for Scherer’s very misguided (trying to be nice here), commentary.  Bull Feces.

This law is simply one more shot across the bow of the weird world of Tea Bagger reality.  The arch conservative state of Arizona (and yes folks I have lived there), has once again shown a disdain for simple adherence to the rights declared in our Constitution.  The very idea that a Phoenix Cop, or heaven forfend one of Sheriff Arapaio’s goons decided to stop a “suspected illegal” on the street and DEMAND HIS or HER PAPERS, simply is loathsome.  But hey, it was the standard in Germany in the 30s, so why not in RABID RED ARIZONA in the 2000s?

However, this level of commentary does not surprise me, Sherer shows his hard rabid right bias in every single one of his “blogs”.  One might take him a teensy bit more serious if he ever hewed to a more centrist position.  But no, like his evident hero, Krauthammer, Scherer must flay the hide from the Democrats and LEFTISTS and PROTECT OUR AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE.

To even consider that this LAW was reasonable is to show that one simply had no concept of rights of remaining free of police harrassment.  Funny how the Republican Conservatives and Tea Baggers are ranting all the time about keeping government out of their business, yet one such as Sherer has the audacity to heartily applaud this idiocy from Arizona and wrongfully points to the President of the United States as being out of the box….

Two words indeed Mr. Scherer, BULL FECES.
