If you’re looking for some unique holiday gifts this weekend, the annual ArtKlub holiday show and art event may be the perfect place to begin your shopping spree. The show features the work of more than a dozen area artists who meet every Sunday morning at Sterling’s Atlanta Bread Company for fun, education, encouragement and project critiques.
The Sterling ArtKlub artists work on a range of projects including cartoons and comic book illustrations, photography, sculpture, fine art drawing and paintings – and anything else they find inspiring. This year’s holiday show participants include Sterling residents Mariah Arant, Iszy Kallid, Cynthia King, Patrick Quinn and Jessica Shanley. Also participating in the show are James Gealy and Tamara and Walt Stoneburner, of Ashburn; Mark Mandolia, of Reston; Abbie Stewart, of Herndon, and Hatton Slayden, of Warrenton.
You may see some work on the walls by calligrapher Parry Yousefzadeh, a special education teacher at Lowes Island Elementary School, who is married to Joey Yousefzadeh, the owner of the Atlanta Bread Company store.
The ArtKlub artists will be joined by author Tricia O’Hara, who will be signing copies of her cookbook, “Saratoga Grazing,” on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The award-winning cookbook focuses on the history and cuisine of Saratoga Springs, New York, the site of America’s first horse racing track. In addition to recipes from the area’s well-known restaurants, resorts and B&Bs, the book offers a look at the extravagant cuisine of the region’s 19th century chefs and their secret cooking techniques.
The ArtKlub has been meeting at Yousefzadeh’s store on Sundays for the past three years. From time to time, the group takes road trips to scenic places and art-related venues. Originally launched by several friends looking for a place for creation, inspiration and sharing, the group welcomes newcomers. The meetings take place between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. at the Atlanta Bread Company store located across Nokes Boulevard from the Dulles Town Center mall. Bring something to draw with, something to draw on and something to show. There is no planned topic and no set agenda.
Although, in its own words, the ArtKlub sometimes “exceeds the PG-13-rating” with work in progress and reference material, the group is kid-friendly, does its best to shield children from anything not age-appropriate and often provides extra drawing supplies and creates sketches for youngsters at the table.
If you find yourself at loose ends on a Sunday morning, have an interest in art, wish to draw, learn or critique – or just like great conversation, this could be an interesting spot for you.
The ArtKlub holiday show and art event takes place on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Atlanta Bread Company at Dulles Town Crossing, 45633 Dulles Eastern Plaza Center, in Sterling.
The artists also happen to have a Facebook group as well as a MeetUp gathering that contain additional behind the scene photos, example projects, contact information, and information about upcoming get togethers.
