Early Bird registration is now underway for Brambleton Kids Run the Nation’s fall season. This structured community-based youth program (with curriculum developed by the Road Runners Club of America) encourages the enjoyment of running and fitness for boys and girls. The program runs in both the fall and spring and emphasizes participation, having FUN, and developing a healthy lifestyle as opposed to a competitive running program. The kids (ages 6-14) focus on improving their personal times while increasing endurance and distance.
Participants meet twice weekly for 8-weeks at Legacy Elementary in Brambleton to train for a 5k (or 1 mile Fun Run for the younger kids). Each week, a new lesson is presented on topics such as pacing, proper running form, hydration/fueling, and goal setting. Participants are divided into age and ability groups and work with volunteer coaches on endurance and speed. Progress is tracked as they train for group participation in a local 5k.
Aside from the obvious fitness and health benefits, Brambleton Kids Run the Nation Coaches noticed a huge boost to kids’ confidence through participation in the program. A testimony to the success of past seasons, steadily increased their speed and distance through the duration of the program. Additionally, participants have been running and placing in a number of local races outside of the program.
“This program allows us to do something active with our kids, but also meets a tremendous need for a co-ed youth running program in our area,” said volunteer coach and Brambleton resident, Dario Campolattaro. Running is a lifelong sport and only requires a pair of sneakers and the desire to run; almost anyone anywhere can be a runner! While parents are not required to train with their kids, many chose to join practices to train along with the group.
Although the program meets in Brambleton, non-residents are welcome to join. For more details, or to register, visit: http://www.active.com/running-league/ashburn-va/brambleton-kids-run-the-nation—-fall-2012
