No PFHS Parade This Week, Fall Fest, Circus Finale, Driving Pink

It’s a block party: One of the community’s most treasured annual traditions—the Potomac Falls High School homecoming parade—will not take place this year, apparently because of the need to stop traffic along Algonkian Parkway after school for the event. The good news is that efforts are underway to get Virginia Department of Transportation approval to hold the parade next year. In the meantime, a new type of celebration is planned as part of the 2012 Homecoming festivities. On Friday, Oct. 5, the parade will be replaced by a Community Block Party from 5-7 p.m., with free admission. The party includes carnival games, a dunk tank, music, fun bounce and obstacle course. The food vendors on hand will donate a portion of their food sales to the school. The community is invited to attend. The block party will be followed at 7 p.m. on Friday by the PFHS homecoming football game against Leesburg’s Tuscarora High School. The homecoming dance takes place on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 8 until 11:30 p.m.

Fall Fest: CountrySide presents the community’s annual Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 6, from noon until 4 p.m. at the Parkway pool parking lot on Algonkian Parkway. This family-friendly event features crafts, food, a hayride and a moonbounce. For information, call 703-430-0715.

Circus finale: This is the final week to catch the Big Apple Circus before it heads north to pitch its signature Italian-designed big top at Lincoln Center. The new Big Apple Show, “Legendarium,” takes the center ring at the field at Dulles Town Center through Monday, Oct. 8. For information, call 888-541-3750.

Driving pink: In support of October’s designation as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Potomac Falls Express Lube & Car Wash this month will donate 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale of AutoTex PINK windshield wiper blades to the Tigerlily Foundation, an organization created in support of young women dealing with breast cancer. In addition, 10 percent of the purchase price goes directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation from the manufacturer. The wiper blades, in pink or black, fit nearly every vehicle on the road today. For information, call 703-444-8600.
