‘The Descendants’ (R)

In the midst of the holiday blockbusters and heartwarming classics, “The Descendants” delivers a realistic look at life and loss without any easy answers. But even so, it manages to capture one man’s struggle to reconnect with his family and do the right thing.

It’s a mature nuanced film with true-to-life performances and one of the best depictions of a slow recovery from tragedy depicted on screen.

“The Descendants” also reminds you why George Clooney is the star he is. Expressing more on his face than he does through his lines, he walks a thin road between comedy and caricature, finding a place where doing the right thing makes sense.

As excellent as Clooney is in “The Descendants,” the movie is brought home by its three younger cast members, playing his two daughters and random house guest. Newcomer Shailene Woodley in particular delivers an award-worthy performance as the older daughter. She effortlessly glides between petulance, endearment and wisdom in a realistic way that most parents will quickly recognize.

Lighter and more fun than the subject matter should allow, Clooney’s slow reconnection with his family slows down at times, but “The Descendants” provides a real emotional punch in the subtlest way possible.

Dear Mr. Widzinski,Thank you for your email in supporting my resolution of opposition to the Commonwealth Transportation Board’s back-door effort to pursue construction of the Outer Beltway.  This afternoon, the Board voted 6-1-2 (Supervisor Delgaudio voted No, Supervisor Waters and Supervisor Buckley absent) to approve my resolution.  The tremendous outpouring by Loudoun citizens of support for my resolution and outrage at the end run around the CTB process by several of its members played a key role in the Board’s decision.  Staff is in the process of finalizing the formal Copy Teste of the Board’s action so that the Board’s position can be entered into the record of tomorrow’s CTB meeting.  I think the message to the CTB, the Governor and others who supported such an effort is clear.  However, I will continue to monitor the situation and alert you to any further developments. Best regards,Jim BurtonSupervisor, Blue Ridge District

I have a little secret about this one, actually. Everyone who knows me thinks I’m fearless in the face of heights, and I endlessly encourage that belief. The secret? I’m scared of heights. Not the so-terrified-I-can’t-move scared, just a very strong fear that may or may not leave me trembling (don’t tell!). So in college, I went skydiving. That moment at the door, immediately before the jump, the edge of being safely in a plane and careening toward the ground, is the scariest place in the world for me. But the jump is one of the most amazing–and most powerful–things I’ve ever experienced. I went again a couple of years ago, and I’m always the first to volunteer to store things in the rafters of the garage or clean the gutters. That fear thrill never quite goes away, no matter how many times I explore heights.

Clooney and everybody else luicnded is great but it’s really Payne who shines as the writer bringing out some funny humor but not without forgetting about the real rich moments of human drama. Good review. A good film but not as great as I was expecting.
