The past few years have been teeming with Hollywood remakes of old classics, updated for the screen with mixed results. With lackluster expectations, I can report the Muppets finally have another movie that they can be proud of.
The Muppets is the great equalizer. Grown men and women still giggle at Miss Piggy’s “heeyaah” kick – and they’ll find a new appreciation now that they can share similar memories with their kids.
But rather than just a trip down memory lane and a reintroduction to Kermit and Fozzy, “The Muppets” would actually be a good film in its own right – even without the nostalgia.
Our Muppets are still cute and they’re still clever. Rather than containing two types of humor (one for adults and one for kids), “The Muppets” uses different types of humor that really appeal to everyone.
And don’t forget the music. While I personally can’t imagine a score that equals the 1979 “Muppet Movie,” this newest version includes some fan favorites and builds in some new additions that might persuade you that Kermit’s best days are yet to come.
