Homeschooled athletics

I was disappointed to see Tom Marshall’s letter claiming that Delegates Randy Minchew and David Ramadan are somehow “jeopardizing” public school athletes. Minchew and Ramadan are simply trying to allow homeschool students to be eligible to play on public school sports teams.

Homeschoolers pay all of their school taxes. They don’t use any public school resources. I can’t see how simply making them eligible to play on public school teams is going to hurt anyone.

Everyone knows about Tim Tebow. He was a homeschooler in Florida. The Florida legislature changed the law to allow homeschoolers and homeschool sports teams to play against public school teams. Because of this change to the law, Tim Tebow was prepared for future victories as quarterback for the Florida Gators.

As a homeschool graduate myself, I think it would be incredibly exciting if Delegates Minchew and Ramadan are successful in allowing more high quality athletes to be available to public school sports coaches. Who knows? Maybe a future Tim Tebow will come from Loudoun County, and lead the Hokies or Cavaliers to victory.

Education is not one-size-fits-all.  Public schools, by necessity, teach in a one-size-fits all manner which means some kids get “left behind.”  Thankfully, Virginia allows parents to provide education at home if they should so choose.  When parents homeschool under the Virginia Homeschool Law, they still have obligations to the local public school, such as submitting to them the curriculum and providing proof of academic achievement.  Why not allow these kids who are technically “in the system” to also participate in sports?

we all make choices, if someone choses to homeschool, that is their choice…keeping in mind that by making that choice there, something will be sacrificed. If I choose to send my child to public school then I must abide by the rules of that school system..I cannot pick and choose. So, for those who want the benefits of public school you have the right to attend those schools and enjoy all the things that go with it..if you chose not to go there..tough. Why should your kids be so entitled? Either homeschool or go to public school, you can’t have both.

Homeschool parents distance their kids from the public sector for various reasons; why do they wish their children to be with others that don’t have the same views? Where’s the LoCo homeschool sports league?

Marshall’s a loser who should have been voted out. He’s all about his own ego. Me. Me. Me. I’m tired of the same old white males that lack logic, common sense and professionalism.

Enuf Already—time to enter the 21st Century!  Students should have MORE opportunities instead facing an “all-or-nothing” choice with their education.

zzzzz tired of the Tim Tebow arguement….Marshall points out valid restrictions that the public school students have to abide by that the homeschool students would not (have to be in school by 9am, etc) since no one is monitoring the homeschooled student on a daily basis.  And your reasoning that homeeschoolers pay all their school taxes and don’t use the public school resources would also be true for any kids attending private schools.  Should they be allowed to play on the public school teams if they wanted to?  Choices are made.  The choice to homeschool means there are consequences and everyone doesn’t need to bend over backward to accommodate everyone else.

Well-stated!
