“I know who Romney prays to. That’s the same god that I pray, too,” said musician Andy Griggs, adding that he wasn’t so sure about other folks in Washington, DC.” Opening speaker at the Romney Rally in Leesburg on Oct. 17, as reported in the Leesburg Patch
Not sure if Mr. Griggs really understands the God that Romney prays too. For example his “god” (as interpreted by Joseph Smith, the founder of Romney’s church, practiced polygamy, from the time the church was founded by on April 6, 1830 until 1890 when the federal government stopped the practice or Utah would no longer have been an incorporated state. According to Joseph Smith, polygamy was a divine commandment and he practiced it personally, by some accounts marrying as many as 30 women. Then in 1879 ,the Supreme Court upheld the Morrill Act of 1862, which banned the practice.
Interestingly enough the Republican Party at the time, pushed for this action stating that polygamy was one of the two acts of barbarism with “slavery” being the other. When they outlawed polygamy, the Supreme Court stated that: “Laws are made for the government of actions, and while they cannot interfere with mere religious belief and opinion, they may with practices.”
It took another eleven years but the Mormon Church Leader at the time, Willford Woodruff, finally forbade plural marriages in 1890. So for 60 years Romney’s church (god) preached in favor of polygamy. So now we know why Governor Romney dislikes federal intervention. I also understand that women are not allowed to hold church office. So, together with his on again, off again position on abortion, I understand why we women are not in favor of his election.
So does Mr. Griggs really understand what he is saying? I know which God I pray to and it is the same Christian God that President Obama and others I know of in DC who care about the less fortunate, pray to.
