Emergency vehicles and about 450 motorcycles rode through downtown Leesburg for the annual America’s 9/11 Ride to honor victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Spectators waved and held up American flags as the procession went by Aug. 17. Starting in Somerset, Penn., the riders head to the Pentagon and travel to New York the next day to visit all three memorials.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 311 watched across from Ida Lee Park where an American flag was suspended between two firetrucks. America’s 911 Foundation sponsors the ride as well as the pack. Six-year-old Sean Csizmadia held the American flag for the Cub Scouts and watched his father Jimmy of the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company drive the lead vehicle through town.

Shayln Gomes of Leesburg brings her two children, Kyla, 10, and Kahlel, 5, to the event every year. It’s important to teach children the history of what we went through and for everyone to come back together in camaraderie, Gomes said.
