For the second consecutive day, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) joined former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine on the campaign trail, as Kaine tries to secure votes for his Senate bid against Republican George Allen, another former Governor of Virginia.
From MVM International Security in Ashburn, Warner and Kaine watched an “asset recovery” demonstration that included machine guns and model terrorists; the two then spoke to and took questions from the local employees, before touching on national security, sequestration, the debt and deficit and the “talent economy,” a tag line of Kaine’s campaign.
“I want to go to the Senate and basically work on talent issues,” Kaine said. “I want to work on education and workforce development, immigration reform – got to be about being the most talented place on earth. I have a real passion to hopefully pick up some Sen. [Jim] Webb’s work on military and veterans’ issues; I look at our military and veterans as a talent pool.”
Kaine served as lieutenant governor while Warner was governor from 2002 to 2006. During that term, Kaine said he learned from Warner a great deal about balancing a budget and making strategic cuts. The former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Kaine, touted his experience in the governor’s mansion, during which he was forced to plug a multi-billion dollar shortfall in the state’s budget during the Great Recession.
Warner praised Kaine as a guy who knows how to compromise and reach across the aisle, a trait severely needed in the Senate. The junior Senator from the commonwealth, Warner has spent much of his energy trying to negotiate a bi-partisan solution to cut down the federal debt and deficit, an issue he said he’s “obsessed” with.
“The biggest single threat to our country is not the terrorists, it is out debt and deficit,” said Warner, a member of Congress’ so-called “Gang of Six,” a bi-partisan group of senators studying the nation’s debt crisis.
Kaine and Allen have been locked in one of the tightest Senate races in the nation. The two will have their second debate Thursday in Fairfax.
The Republican’s campaign has run ads and issued statements to paint Kaine as partisan leader of President Barack Obama’s policies. An Allen spokesperson said Kaine supported billions in tax increases, made significant cuts in higher education and imposed burdensome regulations during his time as governor.
