Altar’d State, a new women’s clothing boutique in The Village at Leesburg, sells clothes with a Christian aesthetic, but store manager Cathy Cleveland wants everyone to feel comfortable in her business.
“It’s very evident we’re a Christian store,” Cleveland said, “and we get customers of different races, cultures and beliefs. They come here and love our stuff. It’s the service we give.”
A Christian clothes store, in this case, means clothing with modesty in mind. The products range from layered, Bohemian-chic blouses that wouldn’t be out of place in an Anthropologie outlet, to Miss Me jeans with crosses sewn into the back pockets. A central kiosk sells a selection of books about interior design, vegan pastries and advice for young Christian women in high school and college.
Altar’d State’s religious overtones are hard to miss, from the name plate on its Village Market Boulevard store front to the piped-in music by Christian artists like B. Reith and Dara Maclean. Cleveland and her employees present an open, inclusive atmosphere, helped along by abundant track lighting, bright colors and a back-lit display of their logo, behind the front counter, made of clear marbles.
“We want to be close and involved with our customers,” Cleveland said. “You don’t see that in the outlets.”
The store, which opened in November, is the newest in a regional chain of 11. Altar’d State started two years ago in Knoxville, Tenn., the brainchild of two former retail executives, Aaron Walters and Brian Mason, Cleveland said. Their Christian values influence the store’s policies, she said: Altar’d State closes on Sundays, 10 percent of net sales on Mondays go to local charities, and employees can earn up to four extra hours of pay a month if they do volunteer work.
Cleveland, who came from the Philippines to study at Parsons The New School For Design in New York, prayed to get her job as store manager. She had worked in retail for years, and sometimes felt spiritually drained by a job that served no higher cause than that of company shareholders.
“It’s a great idea to have Sunday off. You have to have time for family or church instead of being at the mall. I think it’s best to feed your soul,” Cleveland said.
Now, Cleveland is excited to work for a company with priorities beyond the bottom line, and she and her employees are eager to introduce new style options to Loudoun shoppers. It’s been a challenge to open a new store in a weak economic climate, Cleveland said, but she expects to see good business as word-of-mouth spreads.
Gina Burnside, of Leesburg, started shopping at Altar’d State because she likes the store’s tops, accessories and the Christian music. She’s a regular customer, she said, and hopes the boutique will thrive.
“I think we needed something like this,” Burnside said.
I can not wait to check it out
Altar’d State joins the The Christian Shoppe
on North Hatcher Avenue in Purcellville as stores catering to Christian values. There is a whole lot of praying going on in this county and many of us believe Altar’d State was drawn to Leesburg. I wish them the best.
I can’t wait to check it out!
This has become my favorite clothing store in Northern Virginia. I knew it was different as soon as I walked up to the door and saw that the store is closed for a day of rest on Sundays. The overhead music is all positive and the clothing is fun. I wish you much success and will do my part!
Thank you all for the nice comments! Me and my team are always ready to assist you with your wardrobe selection and perhaps recommend a good book to read…
I love their candles and scents! Christian music playing while shopping made a big difference…uncommon but very positive!Keep it up and may your store thrive!
These clothes will also confer special rights and privileges when dealing with Loudoun County government and its leaders.
Now you can really wear your religion on your sleeve. Maybe this will take some of the pressure off the courthouse lawn.
I’m going to pump my paycheck into this store. God Bless Cathy Cleveland..
I really enjoyed shopping in this store. Great prices and cute stuff! Good luck in your new space!
I am happy to see a business run by folks with Christian values. It works for Chick-Fil-A! And now that I have been made aware of it, plan to visit as soon as possible to support them.
I thought this was a unique, fun store! I especially liked the jewelry and home goods offered. They offer something different than what you find at the mall.
Good to hear. We will have to swing on by and have a look-see.
