Arlington man dies in crash after deer plows through windshield

An airborne deer crashed through a car windshield Feb. 18, taking a man’s life.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2004 Toyota Prius, driven by 42-year-old Richard Swingle of New York, was traveling eastbound on Route 9 near Route 704 at approximately 7:30 p.m. A deer attempted to cross the roadway, and the Toyota plowed into the animal, sending it into the air.

The animal’s body struck the windshield of a 2000 Nissan Xterra driven by 40-year-old Juan Salgado. The Nissan was traveling westbound when the deer shattered the windshield and fatally injured a passenger, Rodolfo Diamantio Ruiz Villatoro, a 26-year-old from Arlington.

Salgado and another passenger in the Nissan were taken to the Inova Loudoun Hospital Cornwall Campus for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the Toyota was injured in the collision but declined further medical treatment.

Route 9 was closed and law enforcement units diverted traffic for approximately an hour while members of the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated.

Comments

What a bunch of insensitive idiots, If You could only understand how hurtful Your stupid (trying to be funny) comments are, You might not do so, but I kind of doubt it. You dummies give true outdoorsmen a bad name, Some poor young fellow lost his life, this story wasn’t about “huntin"ck

PETA = People Eat Tastey Animals!

Doe season is still in! I am surprised no one has blamed it on some hunter chaseing the deer out on the road!

Sterilize Bambi.

Does no one have any feelings for the poor deer that was killed by these vehicles?  We should limit the amount of cars coming in from WVa.

GunNeck-
umm pretty sure “men” aren’t the only ones who can sit and talk huntin’.

Hey Ann -  Go back to your girl scout cookie sales and leave the talk about hunting to the men.

do not ask
for whom the bell tolls
It tolls for thee
          -Dunne

This breaks my heart…

It would be safer if the deer would wear their reflective vests when they are in the road.

If it was limited to just doe season it would be better..1 buck takes care of a herd of does…so minimize the problem cause when you kill 1 doe you potentially prevent 2 to 3 more coming into this world.

Hey GunNeck - someone needs to hunt you year round!

somebody needs to increase gun hunting of deer from a few weeks at thanksgiving to year round. we can reduce deer populations in no time.

We need to ease restrictions on hunting. If you don’t kill these things with Winchesters and Remington’s, you’ll do it with Nissans and Toyotas.

What a freak accident

@Dixie….the guy in the Prius was fine. The one in the truck lost his life. Read. Very sad.

According to last night’s news report, at least one passenger is in critical condition.  Very sad accident.  My condolences to all involved.

Dixie.  You are a insensitive fool

Toyota Prius?  That’s why real men need to drive trucks.

just goes to show you. live your life to the fullest..it could have been you.

Poor kid. What are the odds?
