The Loudoun Library Foundation raised $40,000 in its annual Giant Used Book Sale, held in Leesburg June 15-17. Over 3,000 people attended the three-day sale, which offered over 75,000 used books, CDs and DVDs.
Funds benefited the Loudoun County Summer Reading Program and improvements to the library’s website design. The foundation gave a grant to the Thomas Balch Library to continue digitizing WAGE radio tapes, which document Loudoun County news, culture and sports from 1958 to 2009. Additional money from the sale may also support a public art project at Gum Spring Library.
After this year’s sale, the Library Foundation is looking for 3,000 square feet of new warehouse space in Loudoun County as the donated space they were using is no longer available. Without a place to sort and store books, “there is a strong possibility of no Book Sale in 2013,” a release from the Foundation said.
“Our needs are very minimal: unfinished space; heating so our volunteers can work through the winter; and a loading dock so we can pull up a truck to deliver books and get them out again for the sale,” said Library Foundation President Chris Hill. Because the Library Foundation is a non-profit organization, donated warehouse space is tax-deductible.
