Candidate launches write-in campaign for Broad Run District

A Broadlands resident has launched a write-in campaign for the Loudoun County School Board’s Broad Run District.

The announcement from Joy Maloney, 40, a former Frederick County, Md., mathematics teacher, came Friday in the wake of news that the sole candidate for the seat, Kevin Kuesters, was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife on Oct. 4.

Kuesters denies the allegations and told the Times-Mirror last week that he’s convinced the charges will be dismissed once he’s before a judge.

Maloney, however, said she believes the Broad Run District deserves better, saying her opponent isn’t qualified for the seat.

“I feel that voters need a choice. I am passionate about our public school system and proud of the outstanding education it provides. I want to ensure that excellence continues in the face of the challenges of the economy and our county’s growth,” Maloney said in a statement. “It had already bothered me that my opponent sent all three of his children to private school. After he was arrested, several Broad Run residents encouraged me to commit to serving our community as it deserves.”

Maloney, according to her statement, was a teacher for five years before entering the information technology field, where she is now a software developer for a government contractor. She has a master’s degree in science in education leadership from Hood College, and a bachelor’s degree of science in secondary education from the University of Maryland, College Park.

“I know it’s an uphill battle to win a write-in campaign, but it just didn’t feel right to sit on the sidelines and allow my opponent to run unopposed,” Maloney said.

The candidate is a native of Montgomery County, Md. She and her husband of 19 years have lived in the Broadlands area for the last 10 years.

Her daughter attends Eagle Ridge Middle School.

This is a developing story.

I agree with Steve, so I’m writing in Howard Stern. Only logical choice.

Will someone PLEASE convince Steven Dargenio to run for Broad Run School Board. Has anyone done more for our youth in the Broad Run/Ashburn community the past decade. Leagues, Camps, Mentoring, Good Shepherd Alliance Homeless Organization. We need someone that will look out for our kids and be their voice on the board.

Ms. Maloney will be a wonderful, science-based member of the Board, as well as someone who knows how to teach kids.  All of us in Loudoun County need to support her quest for excellence.

Letting an ex school teacher on the board is like letting the fox into the chicken house.

Back in 2007, Tag Greason tried a Write-In Campaign and lost to Robert Ohneiser by 12% points.

Good Luck Maloney. But Write-Ins (not to mention last minute write-ins of a candidate nobody knows) typically has a snowballs chance in Hades of success.

If Maloney really wanted to serve Broad Run, she would have got on the ballot long ago. We don’t need a tardy person on the Board. If somebody gives me a pen, I might write in my own name. :)

Checked out Maloney’s website:  5 years as a mathematics teacher, an advanced degree in Educational Leadership and a undergrad degree in secondary education.  WHOA that is impressive.

I wonder though, why didn’t she get into the race sooner?  I guess it better late than never.

The last article about this got so many misogynistic comments trashing Kuester’s wife that they had to wipe them all out.  It’s one reason why women victims are hesitant to come forward, they get trashed as deserving it.  This guy sounds like another crazy Christian who doesn’t practice what he preaches.

Sorry - one doesn’t get a restraining order without any evdience against the other one…must be some evidence against Kuester.  He has cricified Piper in the media, and failed to mention his financial woes…not a great person to be on our school board. Even if it is all “nothing”, this clearly isn’t a good time for Kuesters to run for office…what was he thinking?
