Catoctin District representative Sally Kurtz will retire from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors following the 2011 election.
Kurtz, a Democrat who was first elected to the board in 1999, said the decision was one she had contemplated for a while.
“It was more of a realization that it had been three terms,” she said. “I’m getting older and there’s a stress level that is always there with elected office.”
Kurtz is chair of the Joint Board & School Board Committee, and also serves on the board’s Transportation/Land Use Committee.
Malcolm Baldwin, Lovettsville farm owner and a former member of the Piedmont Environmental Council, said Thursday he’s seriously considering running for Kurtz’s seat, but has not officially announced his intentions.
Kurtz’s decision to retire from the board follows a Sept. 8 announcement by Vice-Chairman Susan Klimek Buckley.
Buckley, also a Democrat, said she will not return to the board after only one term.

Thank the lord! This is the kind of change we need. Loudoun BOS needs new members who truly are looking out for the residents of the county. Increasing taxes because of a budget short fall in the millions is NOT the right step/direction for the residents. Why not cut back spending? Last year, did you know that Sally did not care that the residents voted down the meals tax twice and she and the other BOS members decided to put it to the Assembly to get the power to do enact it? She is quoted in the Loudoun Times of saying she didn’t care about the residents backlash because her term will be ending in 2011 and the residents can vote then.
We need new BOS members who will do the right thing and cut the budget and make changes that will help residents survive the weak economy. Raising taxes is not the solution. I look forward to seeing if the new candidates running for these opened positions on the board will make the right change.
Sally not seeking a 4th term? Not the kind of news that would make my ears perk up.
Now hearing about Bergel and Godfrey not running for the school board again would be very nice.
These two have become the puppets of the corrupt SB staffers and have no clue to where schools really need to go. They gave been proven wrong on more than one occasion when it comes to site acquisition and have effectively wasted a load of tax money by agreeing to allow studies on parcels that should have never been considered in the first place.
I’d like to thank the Board of Supervisors for not allowing them, and their cohorts, to trash our countryside for the sake of bailing out a rich man who made the mistake of snaking Wheatlands from its previous owner in a bad economy. A rich man who, by the way, has been making millions exploiting Loudoun for many years.
Hey Dave, hate to tell you, but most of don’t want that but still want Sally gone. Where we going to put all these roads and malls anyways? Purcellville? Hamilton? Round Hill? Lovettsville? Hell, Lovettsville can barely get their town center built even though they want one! The land restrictions in Loudoun don’t permit all these malls or mass residential building anywhere. As far as the roads, yeah those would be nice. You have a car? They usually require something called “roads.”
Only those who want to ruin Loudoun’s rural chacter and turn us into a mass of malls and highways sneer at Sally’s many years of hard work on our behalf. She deserves our thanks as much as she deserves a rest from the Board.
YES!!! I remember writing to the BOS about a variety of issues. MOST of them took the time to always write back, even if the responses were “cut and pasted”...MOST of them!
I agree Martian, in that some of the SB (especially the one who supposedly represents Catoctin and another who tries to find ways to get rid of teachers) needs to go as well! The School Board is supposed to SUPPORT teachers (and system), not stab them in the backs!
Two down. Yippee, they are falling like flies. They know they won’t get reelected so they are resigning before they have to face defeat.
Lets get all the rest to resign before the elections. We need to get the school board members to resign too.
It’s time for a major change in leadership. Change all!!!
Good riddance to you for putting the needs of yourself before those of your constituents! Limestone Overlays? Chesapeake Conservation usage studies? No widening of Route 15 North? Mandatory septic inspections annually for certain systems? Don’t let the door hit you. All you did was find ways for Catoctin ditrict residents to spend more of their hard earned money.
Thank you Sally. You represent what Loudoun County should be all about as it struggles to not turn into Fairfax.
Thank you for your service, Sally. You have been there for the Catoctin District and Loudoun County time and time again. Most recently it was yesterday - holding the line on an already bloated school board budget. Hang in there.
