Cobb Theatres to open Friday

Video

Grab some popcorn, a soda – or a vodka soda – and head into a movie this weekend. Cobb Theatres, Leesburg’s newest cinema, will open July 22.

This week, final touches are being smoothed out on the 68,000 square-foot cinema at the Village at Leesburg. The 12-screen theater broke ground last summer.

This is the first theater for Alabama-based Cobb Theatres in Northern Virginia. The company builds its theaters with accompanying up-scale grills and a full-service bar. Tickets will be sold in the ground-floor lobby, which provides electronic and reserved-seat ticketing.

Moviegoers may be just as delighted at the selection of food and drink as they will for the feature flick. A full-service bar, complete with beer, wine and liquor, sits beside a two-story window on the main level that overlooks the main thoroughfare at the Village at Leesburg. Patrons can order a drink while seated around the bar from a server or they can order a cocktail and take it to their seat inside the theater.

The concession stand faces the bar in the main lobby. Instead of waiting in line, patrons are encouraged to grab food items themselves in a cafeteria-style procession, paying for items from cashiers at the end of the line.

In addition to the concession stand, the grill menu selection may seem more expansive than most patrons are used to at a movie theater.

“[This] entire theater is an entire break from the traditional theater,” said Guy Austin, executive director of theatre operations.

Food items include Italian sausage ravioli, hand-made pizza, barbecue chicken nachos, chicken fingers, coconut shrimp and healthier fare including pita chips and hummus and frozen yogurt with fresh fruit toppings.

When it comes time to settle in front of the big screen, the 12 theaters offer stadium-style seating with custom-designed, rocking seats, wall-to-wall curved high-grain screens, Real-D 3D cinema technology and D-Box seating. D-Box seating is a technology that introduces motion in the stadium seating – movement in the seats is concurrent with the action on the screen. Only a selection of the theaters offer this option.

Leesburg is also home to Tally-Ho Theatre in downtown. Don Devine, of Devine Commercial Inc. in Leesburg, put the 81 year-old, two-screen cinema building up for sale with a $2.6 million ticket price, last year shortly after the announcement of Cobb Theatre’s opening this summer. The future of Leesburg’s original cinema remains unknown, as the building is still in operation has yet to be sold one year later.

Cobb Theatres chose Leesburg for its “tenant mix, multiple entertainment options and outstanding consumer demographics offered by the Northern Virginia marketplace,” Jeremy P. Welman, chief operating officer of Cobb Theatres, said last year in a statement.

Austin said the theater’s opening will help bring more people to the opposite side of the shopping center, which is anchored by Wegman’s grocery store.

“It creates a lot more synergy,” he said.

@IHLC..easy buddy. I totally understand your frustration about people blowing through stop signs, especially in neighborhoods where kids play. Keep in mind, the LCSO has a huge area to police, and the most problematic area, as we all know, is Sterling. Speaking of, I heard that the LCSO busted 3 people in connection to the McD robbery.

Back to this story..congrats on the new movie venture, but the booze gotta go!

@ marble…I totally agree with you. There is no place for alcohol in movie theaters. Those who consume will cause problems for those who are trying to watch and movie, and afterwards, will “attempt” to drive home. This is a problem waiting to escalate.

As far as the cops..what cops?!? They are too busy hiding and catching speeders or hanging out with their buds in local parking lots, shooting the breeze. Meanwhile, cars blatantly blow right through stop signs, 4 wheelers buzz up and down the middle of the road, and people continue to tailgate. Protect and serve?!? Huh!

I can’t wait to try it out.  I am concerned about the alcohol sales.  It’s very frustrating to pay high ticket prices/concessions and then have to listen to everyone talk, text and listen to cell phones ringing while a movie is running.  Now add the possibility of having to listen to a drunk or two during a movie.  NOT fun!

Believe it or not Tally Ho used to compete with the theater in Purcellville years back. Tally Ho went from a very nice single screen theater with balcony to two screens.  In all that time, I don’t know if it has ever had a good scrubbing!  It could be a really nice Indie/Arts theater that would keep many of us Loudouners from having to drive into DC or Arlington for the limited releases. This new Cobb theater is much needed to service all the new people.  We should wish these new businesses well as they bring much needed revenue to the county to pay for our overpriced schools.

@ Shawn. Actually we don’t, but it was a nice thought. I just hate to drive from here, all the way to the east, but I guess that is the compromise.

Great, booze them up and let out on RT 7 at night.  I hope the police get more than their quota by just parking outside the theater and testing everyone that comes out.
Drinking belongs in bars not in movie theaters with children around.

hey capitalist—how come ur awesome theory didnt work for big banks or for the car industry…screw off, america is not a capitalist country or else, true to its nature, no bailouts would have been necessary…dont be distracted n brainwashed by big words, n the media…

@Loudoun Native, you mean the fun is finding the seat without the busted springs.

You newbies can go to the new, pretty theater.  I rather support the old Tally Ho where the fun is finding the seat with the busted springs.

I just saw “Harry Potter, Pt.2” at the Tally Ho for $3.  No 3-D, no thunder boxes, no booze, just a good first run movie for $3.

LCRez, I thought you guys over in Catoctin County didn’t like development like megaplexes.

@Karen, if I didn’t live within walking distance of the Tally Ho, I’d probably feel much as you do. OTOH, probably about 3k or so people do, and there’s a cinema in downtown Woodstock, VA ... I do agree it could use a facelift on the interior.

Congrats on Leesburg getting this theater. What is the possibility of one coming to the western end of the county? I do agree, in that alcohol shouldn’t be served at the theater as it will cause problems.

This is wonderful news. I used to drive to Brambleton for movies. Now there is something close to home and even nicer than FOX cinema in Brambleton.

As to Tally Ho, I would never go there for a movie. Tally Ho will not be able to compete as a main stream theater due to its size, location, amenities, period. The only chance for survival is to become a specialty theater that plays alternative, classic, and art movies.

Also, how does that moving seat hold up during a love making scene?  Can you imagine sitting in that thing during Basic Instinct?

The Tally Ho is a dump. Period.  The owners are nice guys, and the staff is very kind, but the place is an inarguable dump.  Make it one screen and show a new indie flick every week.  That’s how the Tally Ho would make money.

To the post by “Fun one”

There is a difference between the owner of the theatre business and the owner of the building itself. The landlord who owns the Tally Ho would be responsible for any restorations or remodeling, not the owner of the Tally Ho business. In reality, the owners of the Tally Ho business are 3 average men who work with what they have (which is extremely litte, seeing as they have to survive in the black hole that is downtown leesburg) to bring us cheaper ticket prices for first run films and excellent live comedy shows. Long live the Tally Ho!

Just another place for the Leesburg police to stake out and arrest people.  I hope that Cobb theaters has a shuttle bus like Spankys does, otherwise people could get arrested for disorderly conduct.

” the Ashburn part of Leesburg” - I love it!!! That cracks me up man. It couldn’t be truer. The fallacy that the “Village at Leesburg” is actually in Leesburg is as much a fraud as the “Leesburg Corner Outlets”, where I bet 90% of the out of the area customers don’t even know there is a historical town center and never go there. Being in the ever widening corporate boundary of the TOL has no meaning when it’s in a far off finger like V@L is.  When I first came to Loudoun, I went to the Outlets, and had no clue where “Leesburg” was, it looked like a tangled series of roads from the outlets…and that was my impression of Leesburg for months until I finally went past the Outlets on 7 and onto East Market Street…which still looked like every other commercial street I’d even been on, until I finally crested the hill and, nervously, took the left fork…and voila, there IS a town here after all!

I’m sure the high rents charged by Devine Commercial are part of the reason the Tally Ho can never get really going.  Devine Commercial should probably be named “Dream Killer Commercial.”  If you come up with an idea for a business, start it in any one of the many buildings they own in town…chances are you’ll watch it all fall apart as you scrape to come up with the rent payment.

Could that be why so many businesses (other than insurance or legal offices) fail in downtown Leesburg?

It’s about time Leesburg get’s a Big Theatre.  Look how many people live here and travel to Brambelton or Countryside for a movie?  Woo Hoo!!

It takes me as long to walk to the Tally Ho as it does for driving + parking + walking to the theater at the Cobb. Plus, I can get a drink somewhere along the way.

When it comes down to spending $8.75 at a local business versus spending $10.50 (or is it $12.50) at a large chain, I’ll support the local business. But that’s just me. For the folks in the Ashburn part of Leesburg, the Cobb would be more convenient, as parking in downtown can be problematic.

ROOM FOR BOTH
The Tally Ho may well be able to survive the new Cobb Theater’s opening.  They have $1 children’s films, $3 Thursday tickets on first run films, and provide a venue for music concerts and parties.
$10.50 a ticket @ Cobb?  Ouch!
Perhaps there is room for both high end and low end theaters in Leesburg.

Wow, this is such a great idea. I will be visiting my family in Loudoun in about 2 weeks. I will definitely be going there.

Awesome. I used to go to the Arlington Cinema Draft House when I lived out that way.

Looks like we found the type of idiot who votes for Bob Marshall in Donna.

It’s called the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, and serves food and alcoholic drinks. http://drafthouse.com/about Works fine. Wish they’d have opened up instead of Cobb, but clearly, this food and drink amenitized movie experience thing is a trend in the enterttainment field.  Just like bowling all of a sudden had to be multi-entertainment rock and roll…our ADHD minds can’t stand single stimulations, we need new information at the speed of light for all our senses at once.

As far as talking/texting goes, utube alamo drafthouse texting and see what you get.

Whoops.  Looks like LoudounTimes is quick on the draw.  Someone said the article was missing the prices and there they are when I posted my last comment!

Tickets prices are comparable to other theaters in the area.  $10.50 and $8.50 for matinees (6:00 PM and earlier).

3-D and “D-box” are more.

Check the bottom of the page for price details.

Man finds out Cobb is coming and puts his theater for sale instead of redesigning/remodeling his business. He could have created a grassroots following and wouldn’t have to worry about Cobb

I had always hoped the Tally Ho would undergo renovations to give it a nicer interior and a more atractive lobby/consession area, especially as a Leesburg landmark. I was hoping that they might even be able to squeeze a third screen in there and make it more of a threat to other theaters once they laid out some construction plans.

There is nobody to blame but the owner though. I wanted to rent the Tally Ho for my kid’s birthday, it took them 2 weeks to get back to me only to say they couldn’t tell me if it would be available because they might or might not be renovating. Needless to say, they didn’t renovate and lost a supporter in the process. I ended up hosting 20 kids in the VIP section of King Pinz right across this new theater and everyone loved it.
It can’t be put on the consumer that the owner of Tally Ho isn’t willing to invest in his business. Man finds out Cobb is coming and puts his theater for sale instead of redesigning/remodeling his business. He could have created a grassroots following and wouldn’t have to worry about Cobb. I’m not pro-Cobb, I would have preferred my Tally Ho ideas and gone there to show my support. But, screw it, modern theater, modern amenities, I’m going to check it out.

I couldn’t agree with you less, Jenny.  It is not like an “independent” isn’t a business, just like a “corporate” is a business.  As a customer, I’m looking for the best product.  If my choices are a new, modern theater, with really comfortable seats, state-of-the-art projection and sound, as well as the availability of good food and drink vs. a nostalgic, dated, albeit much cheaper theater, I think I’ll choose the former.

That’s only my choice, however.  Since our economy is based on capitalism, it is up to the thousands of other moviegoers to make their individual choices.  The outcome of those choices is what will decide the Tally Ho’s fate.  If it loses, it will be because it failed to offer a product that enough people wanted to buy.

Simple business.

I would be really interested to know what their ticket prices are….one key piece of information missing from the article.  Right now Tally Ho is a great deal with the YipDeal promotion it runs—-will Cobb be able to beat it?

Having a bigger movie theater in Leesburg will be great, but please continue to support the Tally Ho, as well. I have no ties to the Tally Ho, but think it would be really sad if another independent business closed due to corporate competition. Hopefully, Leesburg will be able to support both.

I have been to theaters like this many times and it is a great experience!  Sometimes there’s just not time for dinner and a movie, so this is dinner WITH a movie!  Relaxing, fun.  I have never seen anyone drunk nor have I seen any problems with rowdiness.  It is a welcome break from standard movie theaters with their overpriced junk food.  Go!  I think you’ll like it. :-)

I have a feeling it’ll take lots of $$$$ to buy enough drinks to get drunk there.

Big mistake to offer alcohol at the movie theater.  I think some moviegoers will get drunk and cause problems during the movies.

Going to a theater is horrible these days.  I’m a movie buff, but I don’t expect this to bring me back to theater going.  There are too many inconsiderate people talking on cell phones and texting these days.  Yes, texting is distracting, the glow from the screen and the button clicking noises are not easily ignored. You think you’re being sneaky and quiet by texting while a movie is going on, but believe me, half the of the theater sees it, hears it, and is privately praying that your cell phone gives you instant brain cancer.

With modern HD TV’s and surround sound at home, a special moving seat, a bar, and a restaurant(which I expect to be $$$$!) may not be enough of a plus to outweight the negative.  Really, it seems to be like this food & beverage set up may cause even more of a distraction.

I’ll give a try though…once.
