County vice-chair will not run for reelection
image

Loudoun County Vice-Chairman Susan Klimek Buckley announced Sept. 8 that she will not seek a second term in office.

Citing her displeasure with politics and the need to spend more time with her family, Buckley, a Democrat, also said she would not seek a seat in any elected office.

So far, no one has filed to run for Buckley’s seat. She represents the Sugarland Run district.

“The time commitment involved with elected office would come at the expense of too many life experiences, particularly with my 10- and 13-year-old sons. That in combination with my growing disillusionment with politics makes this a relatively easy decision,” the vice-chairman said.

“I came to hold elected office by way of citizen activism, primarily focused on school issues. Much to my surprise, my level of frustration as a supervisor has far surpassed my level of frustration as a citizen,” Buckley added.

In addition to her duties as vice-chairman, Buckley also serves on the board’s Finance, Government Services & Operations Committee and Joint Board/School Board Committee.

Oh no, not Volpe! She was a bit of a pain on the Planning Commission (Staton’s appointee, I believe), voting in block with Beerman, Elgin, et al during the last great wave of residential approvals. She’ll be a swift change of direction from SKB, IMO.

Suzanne Volpe plans to run for Buckley’s seat and she’s now a shoe-in with Buckley retiring.  No, it won’t be Dick Black, who is running for the senate.  Marshall and Fasolo should face the music and realize their party is toast for the next two years.

I am disheartened by the news that Supervisor Buckley will not be a candidate for re-election.  She is one of the best of our elected officials, given her eloquence, intellect and integrity.  In addition, she, unlike some of her colleagues is not an ideologue and looks for ways to bring different views to a consensus.  We need her talents and collaborative demeanor in these times. I hope she reconsiders.  Tom Marshall

Buckley is not moderate, she voted against the proposed budget 2 years in a row because she wanted the LCPS to suck up even more money. The one thing I can say is she is tireless, however her agenda is an anathema to many is Loudoun County. I suspect she will be back in a couple years with her eyes set on higher office.

I whole heartly agree with her assesment of the political landscape, and can understand her level of frustration.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.

Time to make way for the hyperspatial express route. :)

I admire Susan even when I have disagreed with her. She has been truly pragmatic and I never doubt that, in her mind, she was looking out for the citizens (even when we disagreed.) She’s a class act, and makes Mcgimsey and Miller look petty by comparison. I will miss her in that BOS seat, but I understand exactly what she’s stated.
Susan, thanks for the service.

Hooray!  One down let’s get the others to resign before the election.  Make it easier to clean house and get supervisors that really represent the citizens of Loudoun.
I don’t care of party affiliation, just new representatives and willing to stand up to the school board to keep our taxes in line with the economy
Can we get a chart on here to keep track of the Supers as they fall/fail.

This is great news!  The FY12 budget promises to be a no-win situation for all of the Democrats and Susan is smart enough to know that they stand no chance of being reelected, so why endure the same type of ugly tactics used against “Loudoun’s Most Unwanted” last election?

Nauseating? Is Dick Black planning to run Jeff? Your beloved Cooch? Please do tell.

I have disagreed with Susan Buckley on several issues, usually schools and taxes, but she has been an excellent supervisor with the utmost integrity and intelligence, and has been a real voice of moderation and reason.  She will be missed, and some of the options to replace her that have surfaced so far are truly nauseating.

Yeah, we wouldn’t want tow trucks abusing people now would we?  Seeing as though they just tow and you get to pay up no matter if they were right or wrong.  There should be zero oversight of this.

I’d like to see an independent win the seat.  Both parties are flushing our society down the toilet in the name of their fundamentalism. BoS is hardly Congress, but its a start.

If you were concerned about school issues, maybe you should have run for the School Board Susan.  Clearly you don’t have the stomach or cojones for politics Loudoun style.  Around here you have to expect that Inova and developers are going to play hardball and try to buy you off.  Too bad it didn’t work out for you.  Last thing we need is Mick Staton back.

I wish Ms. Buckley well.  My conversations with her have been pleasant and I have found her concern real, but action has been lacking.  Certainly the time committment and the politics are no small thing and likely the cause.  Whoever replaces her will hopefully be looking for a challenge and to fill a good amount of time.

Susan proved to be a tireless worker for the good of all. She will be sorely missed.

Susan Buckley will be missed.  She has proven to be a thoughtful Supervisor who only wanted to do what was right for Loudoun County Citizens without regard to party lables.  A stateswoman who was not a politician-what a breath of fresh air.

Ugh@  I’m just looking to make sure the Board is balanced equally. 5 Republicans and 4 Democrats/Independents. :)

When Democrat members (ie: Kelly Burk) on the board start proposing citizen advisory committees on Tow Truck Company fees, we’ve drifted a tad too far to the left.

Glad to see that you’re all about the issues there Alby, and not just a party stormtrooper.

Being on the Board of Supervisors is a full time job that is only good for people with time to burn.
In any case, time to fill that seat with a Republican.
