Courthouse lawn to feature Iraq and Afghanistan memorial

The Loudoun County War Memorial Trust Fund Committee will hold a dedication ceremony for a memorial to the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars at 11 a.m. Oct. 13.

The new memorial will be located on the south lawn of the Loudoun County Courthouse.

During the dedication ceremony, North King Street will be closed from Market Street to Cornwall Street and East Market Street will be closed from King Street to Church Street. Street closures are expected to be in place from 11 a.m. to noon.

Money to build the new memorial was anonymously donated.

The names of four Loudoun County residents who have been killed in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan will be inscribed on the memorial, listed in order by their death dates.

According to Ben Lawrence, chair of the War Memorial Trust Fund Committee, there will be room to add more names if needed.

“We tried to identify all Loudoun County residents who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, but county of residence isn’t included in military records,” Lawrence explained. “Congressman Frank Wolf’s office has been very helpful in expediting our request to the Department of Defense, but we may have missed someone. If so, the memorial is designed such that additional names can be added.”

Mr. Scott Warner, owner of the Downtown Saloon, is the sole contributor for the memorial. He has served both our country and community with pride. It’s a shame that Leesburg’s Town Council won’t give credit where credit is due.
