A woman from Ghana ran afoul of officers with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at Washington Dulles International Airport when she failed to declare a large amount of U.S. currency Sept. 10.
Traveling from London to Dulles, the passenger declared having less than $10,000, but when officers conducted a search, they discovered $29,900 in a zippered compartment in her handbag.
The money was seized, although the traveler was advised on how to petition for its return.
In a prepared statement, Christopher Hess, CBP Port Director for the Port of Washington said, “Travelers who refuse to comply with federal currency reporting requirements run the risk of having their currency seized, and may potentially face criminal charges.
Because she was not charged, the passenger’s name was not released.
