Family commemorates anniversary of girl’s murder

An Ashburn family is remembering a fateful anniversary this week – the murder of Erica Heather Smith.

On the afternoon of July 29, 2002, Erica – a 14-year-old about to begin her freshman year at Stone Bridge High School that fall—left her house to visit a friend and never returned.

Her family searched frantically, for her but the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office did not alert the public since it had classified the girl as a runaway.

Less than two weeks later, two people taking a walk during their lunch break found Erica’s body in a shallow grave in the woods near the Beaumeade Corporate Park in Ashburn.

Her killer has yet to be found.

“This is still just as emotional as it has been from the beginning,” said William Smith, Erica’s father. “It doesn’t get any easier just because it’s eight years later.”

Erica’s story has appeared on “America’s Most Wanted,” and her parents continue to pray that her killer will be brought to justice soon.

But investigators need more clues to make an arrest. Even the most minute detail could help break the case wide open.

Meanwhile, Erica’s family continues to search tirelessly for those details.

“We can’t just not do anything,” William Smith said.

Anyone who may have information on the Erica Smith case is asked to call the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-0475. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Loudoun Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919. A large reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and an indictment.

Donations for the reward fund can be sent to BB&T Bank, 2250 Davis Drive, Sterling, VA 20164. Checks should be made out to the Sully Elementary PTO Erica Smith Memorial Fund.

no win no fee accident claims

This is a tragedy that such a young life taken away and a family that is still grief stricken. I personally know the members of this family.  They still grieve and hope to someday find this sadistic killer, bring that person to justice and bring final closure for them.

Sad to know that it’s been 8 years and still the case had been unsolved. This unhuman and unconcience act by the killer brought a tears in this young lady’s parents. Hope they would find that killer and bring justice.

R.I.P. Erica!!! I will remember all the memories we had when we went to church together. Miss you!!!

Okay now this is not right.  It has been eight years, and I don’t believe for *one second* that the police don’t have suspects in this case.  It is unacceptable.  Furthermore, I absolutely do believe that someone (perhaps several) people either currently or perhaps who formerly lived in this area know who the murderer is, and yet have said nothing.  There is no excuse.  This little girl had her life snuffed out in a horrific way, her family has had to suffer endlessly, and there is no justice.  Unacceptable.

This is a very sad time for us all, we are constantly thinking about her and the eerie part of all of this is the fact that the killer or killers are still out there and we do not even know if it is someone we may see or talk to and not even know it….Please if you have any information..even if you think it may not be anything helpful…please call. I know that a lot of her friends were young 8 yrs ago but they are now all young adults and hopefully will have a clearer mind as to what they should do if they saw or knew anything..do it for Erica..do not let these animals get away with this. We know that she is in a better place now and she is looking over us all but please what happened to her should not go unpunished…We love you and miss you..RIP Erica and kiss grandma for us and tell her we miss her also.

God bless this family.  I can’t imagine not having closure on a loved one’s death.  I hope they find the killer and bring justice to this family.
