UPDATE: Fire scorches apartment complex in Sterling, causes $2 million in damage

Update: 4:55 p.m.

Fire Rescue spokesperson Mary Maguire said that the fire was accidental in nature and occurred from “improper disposal of smoking materials.”

Damage estimates are in the $2 million range.

Original story:

An early-morning apartment fire broke out in Sterling on Nov. 20, displacing residents.

Initial reports were that Loudoun Fire and Rescue responded at 7:39 a.m. to the apartment, located in the 20500 block of Reserve Falls Terrace.

Firefighters had to resort to a defensive attack due to potential collapse damage. Red Cross was on the scene helping the reported 26 displaced residents, as at least 13 units were damaged.

Fire personnel are investigating the cause of the fire and determining the extent of damage. Two civilians were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

This is a developing story.

I smoke and realize what a nasty filthy habit it is. I have tried to quit more times than I care to remember. My biggest nightmare is have one of my discarded buts start a fire. I am very careful about extinguishing them. I can (thank god) only imagine how that smoker must feel. If it were me I think I would as close to suicidal as I would ever be. His carelessness has given me new inspiration to quit this disgusting habit. Believe it or not it was my alcoholic poor excuse of a father who gave me my first cigarette and laughed at me for not knowing how to smoke it right, oh he taught me well the sorry excuse of a parent he was. He taught me to drink as well I quit that 23 years ago, it’s time to quit smoking now and has been for many years. Maybe something positive will come from this if I can.
I wish the families well and please keep us posted as to where and what we can donate to help these poor folks. That smoker could not have pick a worst time of year to be stupid.

My prayers go out to all the victims, except for the idiot who caused the fire. I don’t live in that complex but on the day of the fire I was in that area and saw a burnt apartment building. I heard that it will take a few months for the rebuilding process to complete. I guess the sprinklers didn’t but the blaze out as they should’ve.

I am reminded just how courteous smokers are everytime I come to a stop light and see all the improperly discarded ‘butts’ that litter the ground.

My world is NOT your ashtray!

Smokers should be careful otherwise such incident can cause more damage.

My best friend lost everything in that fire and now she has nothing but her loving family, its a shame that insurance isnt giving her and her kids more, and to the smokers who caused, you have to thank god that no one got killed in this terrible tradegy, I want to start a fund for the victims in this awful tradegy, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do that??

Fires are terrible and traumatic for everyone involved, regardless of the cause. My prayers to all who lost their home and belongings. It always seems worse when it happens around the holidays.

Is there a website or phone number with information on donating items to those who have been displaced in this fire?

More people die in house fires started by cigarettes and other smoking materials than in any other type of fire.

Sure you could charge “smokers” more. Also charge people who use a spaceheater, or people who have candles, or people who could conceivably forget to turn off a burner, or people who use a Fry Daddy, or blah blah blah blah….

These people (my neighbors) lost EVERYTHIGN and the typical self-righteous douchenozzle pipes up with cries of “raise rates/insurance premiums/skin them/shame them.”

Little thought for the displaced people at a time when others are giving thanks, huh?

My condolences to my neighbors.

My heart breaks for these families. I live a mile away and my house burned down two years ago. Luckily insurance helped rebuild our home and lives. Renters don’t have that same luxury. I would love to invite anyone affected over for Thanksgiving dinner. Anyone with info please send me an email robbinsdeals@gmail.com.

Oh, sure, Leesburg NW. It’s totally feasible for anyone to up and buy a house, right? You are blaming the victims and being completely unfair. I get that it’s easier to sit from your position of privilege and gloat about what apartment dwellers do wrong because that way you can convince yourself you’re not in danger of losing your home, but try to control those impulses and be realistic.

My heart goes out to the residents who lost their homes. Is there any sort of relief fund set up for them so we can donate?

My Wallet’s gone! My wallet’s gone!

No sympathies for the idiots who couldn’t be bothered to dispose of the smoking materials properly.  Their neighbors, on the otherhand, I truly feel sorry for them.  They should all send their “smoking neighbor” a thank you note and a bill.

Smoking didnt cause

Smokers. Children and Matches. Space Heaters. Anything is as much a risk for fires to start. These are the risks when you opt to live in an apartment. Your life and property is at the mercy of another person’s idea of safety.

Instead of renter’s insurance, go buy a house.

What a shame—- completely avoidable but for one individual’s negligence!  And who pays for all the damage?  All of us. Smokers should be charged higher premiums for insurance because of high risk behaviors such as “improper disposal of smoking materials.”

not not and not to smoke in the apartment please   and pace.

Yet another reason not to smoke!  Good job smoker who did this.

This is my apartment complex though, thankfully, not my building. Thank you Loudoun Fire and Rescue for your response and help. And thank you to the Red Cross for helping my neighbors in their time of need. Any residents who might read this - please know your neighbors are praying for you and are here to help if there’s anything we can do.
