Heavy rainfall expected today in Loudoun
Rainfall is expected to continue this afternoon and throughout the evening. Heavy rainfall is possible locally and could impact traffic on area roadways. The rainfall could also cause roads to experience high water and others may become flooded as waterways crest.
Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman is asking residents to take measures to ensure a safe commute home.
“We encourage you to monitor local weather and traffic reports and to slow down during inclement weather and maintain a proper following distance,” Chapman said in a statement. “Our priority is that you have a safe commute home."
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office also is reminding drivers that if they find themselves driving in potential flash flood conditions, to never drive through or walk through a flooded roadway or area. Turn around and find an alternate route, the Sheriff's Office urges. Water may be much deeper than it appears, causing vehicles to stall or even get stuck in hidden debris. Stay away from flooded areas and seek higher ground if you're in an area experiencing flooding. It takes only 6 inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult and 2 feet to move a vehicle, the Sheriff's Office said.
If necessary, motorists are further advised to use primary roads on their commutes as many secondary roads are susceptible to flooding.
