Volunteers of local fire stations got a special training treat on Jan. 29 – the chance to fight a home-engulfing fire.

Fire personnel set up the event at a house occupying 43710 Hay Road in Ashburn to practice a variety of training techniques. Volunteers from Ashburn, Leesburg and Arcola participated.

“It was an ideal time to practice things that the firefighters really don’t get to try often,” Loudoun Fire Rescue Spokesperson Laura Rinehart said. “It was a really good opportunity, having the ability to use a real house.”

The property was donated by David Simons of Miller and Smith, a property development team that focuses on Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Assistant Chief for Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Kyle Stephens procured the house late last year. The property the house sits on will be turned into a 17-home development.

Miguel Quijano, Fire Chief for Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue, called the event a “great success.”

“The crews did a good job working together,” Quijano said. “I’m proud of the guys.”

Quijano said that the firefighters were able to try techniques they rarely get to, such as cutting the roof of a flaming home – a technique used to release smoke and heat, increase visibility and help get to any trapped people. Quijano, who has spent 17 years with the department and is in his first year as Fire Chief, said the volunteers get to use an actual real home for drills every two or three years.

Emergency Medical Service providers were also on hand to practice safety and rehabilitation techniques, and there was one minor injury when a firefighter burned his ear.

Comments

Joe, your mom left her shoes over at my house last night.

Really quijano?  Your going to make a comment when your apart of these people?  If people could really see what chaos goes on behind those door, the total lack of accountability with spending.  How many explorers and pieces of apparatus do you guys really need over there?  You all can’t staff them so why buy them?  Keep burning down homes and taking pictures.  That is all you are good for!

Arcola still has volunteers?

It is impressive to see how our in house and county training have made these people who they are today for Ashburn and the surounding communities.
Great job all around folks. Your efforts are truly appreciated.
As expressed above, excellent photography!

Very good photography! The photographer has a good eye!
