Kaine and Allen boast strong fundraising quarters

Both George Allen and Tim Kaine – the two Virginia governors currently seeking a seat in the U.S. Senate – are touting the strongest quarters yet in terms of campaign fundraising.

Kaine, the Democrat, raised roughly $3 million in the second quarter of 2012, while the Republican candidate raked in slightly more than $2 million.

In terms of cash on hand, Allen has an edge Kaine. The Republican has a grip on $3.3 million while Kaine has $2.7 million. Kaine, however, has already secured nearly $3.5 million in fall advertising. Through the summer, the Allen camp expects to spend close to $1 million on ads. Allen spokesperson Emily Davis said they’ve reserved $3.4 million in TV for the fall.

The Kaine campaign highlighted that “over 70 percent of contributions in the second quarter were from grassroots donors giving less than $200.”

“Since the start of this campaign, we have seen extraordinary grassroots support for Governor Kaine’s commitment to work together in Washington to create opportunities and improve the lives of all Virginians, and this quarter was no exception,” said Brandi Hoffine, Kaine for Virginia communications director, in a prepared statement. “Thousands of new donors have gotten involved this quarter because they are tired of the partisan gridlock in Washington that continues to threaten our economic recovery, and they want a Senator who will take a forward-looking, Virginia-based approach to getting our economy back on track.”

Allen, in a his own statement, said he and his wife are “so very grateful for the growing support and generosity of people who share a vision of a better future for families, small businesses and hardworking taxpayers.”

“Each day people from every region of Virginia are joining our dedicated grassroots team, and we’re encouraged by the strong growth in supporters who gave us our largest fundraising quarter of the campaign,” said the Republican. “Our positive message for freedom and opportunity is resonating throughout Virginia as we fight for a more efficient, effective government that spends less and serves better. “
