Robert and Carol Danner, long-time Lovettsville residents, were seriously injured in a head-on crash on Feb. 19 on Route 287 (Berlin Pike) near Red Bud Lane.
At around 8:30 a.m., a 2007 Ford F150 driven by Richard L Edmundson, 24, of Lovettsville, was northbound on Route 287. His truck crossed the yellow lines and struck a southbound 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Robert Danner, 59.
Danner and his wife, Carol, 55, were airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious injuries. Two of their grandchildren who were riding in the Jeep were taken to the Cornwall Campus of Inova Loudoun Hospital and were released.
The Danners remain hospitalized at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Robert Danner suffered injuries to his left hip, left shoulder and left ankle as well as bruised ribs. Carol Danner suffered serious head injuries and remains in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Edmundson suffered minor injuries but did not require further medical attention. He has been charged with reckless driving.
You know…the guy who did this should never be able to drive again…with his record,it sounds like he can not read, nor know his numbers to be going so over the speed limit…I really hope one day I can see you go to jail for a very long time..I feel so sorry for your family knowing that their child did such damage to another family,With Gods help and time Carol and Robbie will get all better
Has this guy been found floating in the river yet?
@ Just an Observer
Carol assured me today while I was visiting her in the hospital that she DID indeed have her seat belt on. That being said, can we please all just let this rest?
.....Jack you really need to know that sometimes it’s best to just be quiet. Perhaps part of her upset was the report of the guy walking around and laughing like it was not big deal (per previous posts)—- not the typical reaction a person would have if they were in a normal state of mind. One would expect the driver to be quite remorseful and concerned. Jack, you may know more than anyone else, but you sure don’t know when its appropriate to talk.
Jack, There are times when one needs to take into consideration the fact that their opinion/2 cents however relevent may not be welcome, especially in a time of emotional stress. In other words, this is no time to be a know-it-all. Have some respect, keep your mouth shut.
Sad daughter its a shame about what happened to your family. However the police cannot just “take people in for drug and alcohol” testing. There has to be probable cause that the driver is drunk or using drugs. Obviously that was not the case.
Prayers be with the Family and Friends
Prayers for the Danners, the grandchildren and the rest of the family.
So if your not a member of the LCPS bus drivers/ attendant family there are not going to be as many well wishers? How about wishing them well because a piece of crap caused them pain and leave the nosense Bus driver stuff out.
Carol and Robert and incredible people and I was so saddened to hear about this. I also understand that the kid who hit them was pulled over earlier that morning in Stephens City for speeding. That area is a 35 mph zone, and the rate of speed that kid was going is totally uncalled for. Please keep us up to date with any new information. Also, if anyone is planning any sort of fund raising efforts to help out with hospital bills and other things, I would love to help out. And, to the rest of the Danner family, if anyone needs ANYTHING like rides to the hospital, meals, whatever - please let us know. I know God is watching over them, and my prayers are continuing.
I am a daughter and my children were in the accident. First of all my parents are still in Fairfax Hospital. My mom is still in the trauma unit with head injuries and now a blood clot in her lung. My dad has had to have hip surgery for a badly broken hip along with other broken bones and a damaged spleen. My daughter has a broken thumb and emotional trauma and my son is having night terrors, and complaining of neck pain. Thanks to all the volunteers and bystanders that helped out on the scene. As far as I concerned LCSO should have taken him in for drug and alcohol testing, instead they only gave him a field sobriety test. Considering the numerous drug manufacturing and possessions charges that he has had in his past, that should be worth more than just a slap on the wrist. Not to mention the speeding and reckless driving offenses as well.
Prayers and blessings for the Danners! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting both of them on a few occasions, and find them to be wonderful people. Please get well soon!
This proves my theory, in that there are far too many idiots driving around our local streets. People blatantly cruise through stop signs, stop at stop signs and then “peel out” shortly after, race up to stop signs, stop, and race again, tailgate, and the list goes on. On several occasions, neighbors have made things mentioned to the police, but nothing gets done.
Occupy LCSO the police do not and cannot give a field sobriety test just because there is a bad wreck and people are injured. There has to be some probable cause of intoxication. Had they smelled alcohol or found beer cans then it would be different. The way that this reads he was charged with reckless driving and not drunk driving thus he is entitled to a ticket and a way to get home. On COPS you see people being handcuffed because they are being taken to the station because they committed a more serious offense.
Prayers gong up for the entire Danner family. We just learned of this horrific accident and are sickened by what has happened. The Danners are wonderful people and we pray they both fully recover. God Bless them.
Common physics from high school:
—- If you are wearing a seatbelt during an accident the friction during the lock up will actually melt some of the materials that are used in making the belt. This will cause the belt to have a stretched out, wavy loose appearence. This is caused by the belt being heated up so quickly that it stretches out during the emergency locking at collision. That is why seatbelts that have been in use during a serious accident, one over 25 mph, they must be examined and replaced
Sorry to offend you concerned citizen but its not possible to have a seatbelt retract into its regular position after a “90mph” crash that people are claiming on here.
Just an observer -
You are not qualified to comment as to whether the passenger was wearing her seatbelt - were you a first responder on the scene? The passengers in the front had to be extricated from the car after being entrapped - For all you know when they were in process of removing Mrs. Danner they released her seat belt and it retracted into place. Please be more mindful - if you were not there you do not know the circumstances.
Compliments to the Fire and Rescue who responded and assisted my Aunt and Uncle. Everyone’s Prayers are coming through, keep it up recovery still is long way off.
@ Jack, http://bvar19.com/history.html?view=1&id=110883 picture you loved ones in that Jeep and tell me can you honestly be concerned with one’s grammar and punctuation.
Jack,
I agree that the original post was poorly written and the poster seemed illiterate but they could have take Edmundson to jail.
Maybe I’ve watched too many episodes of Cops but they usually handcuff people and take them to jail for reckless or suspected drunk driving.
They should have given him a field sobriety test on the spot instead of hours later…
I saw this accident and help watch over the “children while there grandparent were trap. I can not understand how or why the cops did not take this guy to Jail. He walk around the accident like their was nothing wrong and then blame it on Mr Danner. Friend of a friend says he was going 90 MPH. This man should not be able to drive again”
I am convinced that the most ignorant people in the world post on this site. They can’t spell or construct sentences in most cases.
The police do not decide whether someone is “taken to jail”. That is originally decided by the legislature. A reckless driving charge involves a ticket. If you live in Virginia then you have the right to sign and go on your way. If people think that this guy should have gone straight to jail then maybe we need to copy the Iranian style of law where the police decide on the spot whether people go to jail or not.
It is not always Law Enforcement that fails in these situations. The police write the tickets and decide who appears at fault based on their discretion. It is ultimately up to the JUDGE that hears the case. That is where our justice system fails. The people who continue to break the law or disregard common sense while driving, need stiffer punishment. No matter how angry the cop is and no matter how bad they want the “bad guy” punished, it is not up to the officer to punish the criminal. As a matter of fact, the police have to obey constitutional rights of the person at fault. The same duty falls with doctors, EMTs or such… while treating the bad guy who was injured while committing a violent crime. I was hit by illegal immigrants on 2 separate occasions and nothing happened to them. Another time I had someone on drugs hit my vehicle 3 times out of a drug rage. He had 4 previous convictions and tickets in several counties for accidents, fleeing to elude, speeding. That person was roughed up pretty well on the scene while fighting the police and ended up getting a 200 fine in court and 6 months probation. He was in the paper a month later for DUI and injuring 3 passengers. Should we really fault the police? NO. Maybe go after these inconsiderate judges that sit behind a bench and do nothing to punish criminals. Or the attorneys that have a 97 percent plea rating just to increase their conviction status. Repeat offenders learn the system and never get punished, plus we pay for their legal costs through taxes.
Carol, please get well soon.I’m also a bus attendant,we need you.
Sending wishes to the family. Carol, I know I don’t know you, but you’re a member of the LCPS Bus Driver/Attendant Family…please come back to us soon!
People seem to forget that driving is a privilege NOT a right. If you can’t be trusted to drive safely you shouldn’t be allowed to drive. The gentleman in question here should at the very least, lose his license, and get to spend some time in a quiet cell thinking about how he irrevocably changed a family’s life forever - due to his selfish acts.
Mary Edwards, I can’t agree with you more!!! We live in the richest county in America…We should fire ALL current law enforcements and hire REAL ones that know the meaning JUSTICE AND ENFORCEMENTS. May Mr. Edmundson pay for this for the rest of his life. He should take the grandchildern (without him driving) to the hospital to see their grandparents and say, “Sorry I did this to your grandparents”.
We love you Robbie and Carol so much ..we have so many prayers going on for you…we love you get better real soon
Sterilize texters.
Having seen the changes in our town for over 48 yrs and how the drivers race up & down our roads, it is surprising more terrible accidents haven’t happened. Carol went to school with our children and have know both of the Danners a long time. Praying for their recovery. Sounds like Mr. Edmundson needs to stand up and accept that he needs help with his addictions. Sometimes easy to blame the deputies when they don’t do as we think they should.
I am 64 years old and I have seen enough of this-what is WRONG with law enforcement…oh that’s funny-law enforcement. I am sick and tired of the “entitlement society” doing whatever they please and impacting innocent people’s lives and have to pay nothing for it. What a slime. Texting, drinking and drugging behind the wheel of a car should have major consequences. Mu co-worker was hit in front of our work building by someone in a sport’s car who was upset because the officer gave him a ticket. UNREAL. He totaled her car and she had injuries and had to be off work for 2 months. This is RIDICULOUS!!!! Out with the old and in with the new Commonwealth Attorney can’t be soon enough* Prayers for the Danners.*
i heard they tested for drinking but he should have been tested for drugs. he has a history, well known ...why isn’t he in jail? I pray for the Danner’s recovery. They are good hard working Lovettsville people and didn’t deserve this for some misfit on our highways. any one could be next. BEWARE
I hope that all of the witnesses here to this, will testify what they saw, in either the criminal, civil or both cases, when/if they come up. If he really did do and act like you say he did, then you are the key to making the difference for all of us to have him locked up.
I stood in utter horror looking at the jeep when i noticed a person on the other side of the road laughing and carrying on. I asked my friend who could find humor in this? Her answer, that’s the guy who hit Robert and Carol.
lock this #%&$* up and throw away the key. a witness said he was laughing and joking on the scene. glad the sheriff dept gave him a field sobriety test…3 hours after the accident….really???? what a farce!!!! thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the Danners.
gotta agree with speakin….no real punishment for hurting or killing someone while you are driving (impaired or otherwise) in Loudoun County. Too many drivers have gotten a slap on the wrist instead of serious jail time (like the kid who killed the woman outside of Leesburg on 15 a couple years back, or the kid that killed the passenger on Montressor a couple years back or the Ashburn walkers who got hit while in a crosswalk)....best way to get away with murder in this county is to do it behind the wheel of a car.
prayers to the Danners and hope they have a good recovery. The jerk that caused this will get nothing for it. Man killed at intersection of 7 and Battlefield when car plowed over his motorcycle, guy only got a ticket. This commonwealth attorney is really really bad when it comes to prosecuting cases.
ticket for 70/55 SPEEDING on 2/15/2012!!! and then this 4 days later - doesn’t look like this one can learn - lock’em up and toss the keys
http://epwsgdp1.courts.state.va.us/gdcourts/nameSearch.do
Please recover soon! The world needs good people like you both.
I often wonder why some get away with murder, almost murder and get off while others get the book thrown at them for lesser violations that don’t even involve others, what is wrong with the decision makers in this county, I live on Loudoun street and have called often about trying to get radar on Loudoun street and other rds around here, and no one shows up, let me ask y’all, why is Waterford more important than Lovettsville, WHY, the children and adults here have the same risks as anyone please send cars to Lovettsville, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, lets not wait until someone has been killed by these drivers that FLY threw OUR TOWN PLEASEEEE!!!!!!!
Prayers offered for the Danners. I love you both.
You are pillars of the Community.
Edmundson appears to be nothing more than a leach on our society.
Missy, this is why Loudoun needs a new Commonwealth Attorney. Hopefully we can get a new one at the next election cycle. Our current one is the king of the plea bargain, creating dangerous situations for all of us.
Fell asleep my #$$$. He was drunk and he knows it.
Then stop for the same thing earlier in the morning Loudoun county cops what gives this guy should have gone to Jail. Dosent this kind of stuff come up when you run his name that he was stop before. And what about the people he ran off the road before the accident. He belong in Jail
This guy has a pretty long criminal record- 2 assault charges in 2011 - Speeding 2/15/12 - 2 public swearing and intoxication charges - Driving under revoked lic/suspension. UNREAL!!!!! he still has a license.
Holy Moly, Look this guy up on the Loudoun County General Court website. Not the 1st time he has been in trouble. Prayers for the Danner’s!
Do I read this last comment correctly? The guy was stopped earlier in the morning for reckless driving, let go and then caused this accident? I do hope those injured recover fully although it will take much time. Hopefully the grandchildren are okay and the fact they are okay give the injured grandparents much relief. Seriously this guy needs to have the book thrown at him.
Asleep @ 60 mph or 90 mph??? Wouldn’t your foot relax while sleeping? Did he have on concrete boots? and what about his passenger - was he ‘sleeping’ too? Total lie to cover his own butt.
Our prayers go out to the Danners and their families. We wish them a speedy recovery. How is it that this guy was stopped earlier in the morning for reckless driving and he was not locked up on Sunday? He should never be allowed to drive again.
I am Robert Danner’s sister. I agree that Mr.Edmundson should be in jail! Carol and Robbie’s lives will never be the same. Their injuries are horrible. They have lived in Lovettsville for many years and well known by all. They did not deserve this, no one does. It will take a very long time for both of them to recover. Carol is in very serious condition. The guy was going at least 90 mph when he fell asleep stating he had been awake for 24 hrs. Now where do you think he should have been? Sleeping at home where he belonged instead of falling asleep while driving. I hope this accident is on his mind all the time, I hope every minute he thinks of the lives that he has changed. Not that he deserved to be injured but my brother and sister-in-law sure did’nt. I am thankful the grandchildren are ok but I know they will never forget that horrible accident. So yes, I do agree Mr. Edmundson needs to be in jail and never get behind the wheel of another vehicle again.
I do not know those involved in this accident. I pray the Danners and their grandbabies recover quickly. I also pray for Mr. Edmundson.
I saw this accident and help watch over the children while there grandparent were trap. I can not understand how or why the cops did not take this guy to Jail. He walk around the accident like their was nothing wrong and then blame it on Mr Danner. Friend of a friend says he was going 90 MPH. This man should not be able to drive again
I pray for this family and hope they have a speedy recovery God was with them on Sunday
Praying for the Danners. Obviously Mr. Edmundson was doing more than the posted 35 to cause the damage he did. I’ll pray for Mr. Edmundson also - you may want to move out of this little town.
